Help Pay Rent at Trans Shelter in Uganda!

Happy Life Youth Empowerment Center (HLYEC) is a transgender women-led non-profit organization which was formed in 2020 to intervene on different challenges faced by trans women located in Wakiso District, Uganda. HLYEC's mission is to empower young transgender women through various training programs, health programs, advocacy and legal support programs for self-resilience and social recognition.
HLYEC has been operating a shelter since 2021 due to the high rate of homelessness, family and community rejections, life threats and insecurities and many other challenges. So far it has sheltered over 40 transgender women. After the passing of the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023 (AHA) the rate of shelter requests has increased.
We are seeking help with our monthly rent which is $300US per month.
HLYEC has space which can accommodate up to 25 transgender women but due to limited resources we can only accommodate 10, leaving many transgender women without shelter due to lack of enough food, bedding, utilities. We also need help with security. HLYEC does economic activities such as modern farming like growing vegetables and rabbit rearing plus bakery in order to empower the shelter members. Due to the harsh environment towards LGBTQIA+ people in Uganda, most landlords will not rent to them and finding employment is very difficult.
HLYEC is appealing to well-wishers to support this cause of securing and supporting transgender women at a time of suppression and discrimination in our county.
