A career dedicated to the protection of others has been silenced. Twenty-two year veteran Police Officer – Corporal David J. Moore, was terminated for speaking out about police discrimination against officers, mistreatment of people of color in the community, and retaliation, following complaints of widespread police department impropriety.
Law enforcement is the foundation of a civilized society. In communities across America, however, support for the badge is diminished. Officers are challenged, threatened and sometimes, victims of violence and even death. Risk aside, Corporal Moore established his unblemished record working to build relationships with his community. Over the past decade though, he would witness unmistakable civil offenses within in his department, and had to speak up internally.
The mock-lynching of a Martin Luther King doll, officers and command who have Neo-Nazi tattoos, racial pranks and jokes, have been an acceptable practice in the department. The multiple in custody assaults – and even deaths in this southern California city range from distasteful, to revolting. When Moore saw the picture of a male black murder victim as he lay on the Coroner’s table – holding a fried chicken bone placed in his hand as a joke by fellow officers – he knew he could never make change from within. His decision to speak out resulted in termination.
Among the highest of decorated officers in his department, Moore has been recognized as a stellar, contributing officer. College-educated and precise, his accomplishment could not be denied. Officer of the Year, Officer of the Month four times, Robbery Homicide award, numerous GTA awards, Award of Excellence, recognition by the governor, Congress and State Assembly for outstanding arrests, and recognition by the Latino and the Black Law Enforcement Officers Association are among his accomplishments his department attempts to diminish.
In a department of over 200 officers, only one is identified as black. In its history, only one black and two female officers have been promoted past the rank of corporal. Surrounding agencies with smaller populations show a more diverse police force.
The most effective policing happens within. There are officers across the U.S. who want to, but don’t speak up. David spoke out. He knew the risk, but crossed the blue line to his defeat. Now, his department proclaims victory – endorsing the improprieties that cause people to hate police. Don’t allow David to be a sacrifice that empowers corruption. This case will send a message that people still care, and that police can speak out when bad things happen within. Most officers are honorable. Good officers must remain on the street. From the importance of this event, media coverage has begun.
The Police Officers Association is supposed to protect its officers. This association proclaimed, “The only way to increase minorities in the department, is to lower the standards.” This same association ended funding for David’s legal justice with the city.
Please help provide funds for David to continue his fight – and even to cover living expenses during this drawn-out case that seeks to send the message that inaction only helps injustice to live freely, while good dies as a silent minority.
