Stephanie Garza is a registered nurse and a valued team member of the Intensive Care Unit at Methodist Charlton Medical Center in Dallas. Not only has she given herself to take care of patients and families, she also served our country in the United States Air Force for several years. She has been taking care of critical care patients for almost 10 years.
In the last several weeks, Stephanie was experiencing some irritability, headaches, difficulty processing some information and vision changes. She thought it may be stressed induced and went to the doctor. She started some new medication and but it wasn’t helping. Stephanie went to the emergency room, expecting a stroke workup, the CT showed 4 brain lesions in various parts of her brain. The treatment plan was developed very quickly and the brain lesion biopsy was scheduled.
She did great recovering from the biopsy and was discharged a couple of days later to home. On Friday, her family noticed a change and took her back to the ED. She had increased swelling on her brain and was quickly transferred to the Neuro Critical Care at Methodist Dallas. The biopsy resulted as a Glioma.
This did not present as it usually does, several diffuse lesions, as opposed to one big lesion/mass. Stephanie is awake and alert, however, her ability to communicate is worsening. She has expressive aphasia, which is obviously frustrating for her. She is surrounded by a very supportive family. The Dr. came in for a family meeting in which it was discussed that they will start her on oral chemo and radiation ASAP. It was made clear that this is a palliative effort.
This is the most invasive-aggressive, dangerous brain tumor of which little is known. What they do know is that while most tumors expand like snowballs this one alone travels at high speed with finger-like movement invading white tissue of the brain. It’s the most rapidly growing brain tumor with the shortest life expectancy, the median prognosis being just 14 months.
