Support a Black Student of RIE®

FUNDRAISING GOAL:
Raise, at least, $1,500 in scholarship funds for a Black person to attend the RIE Foundations course.

ABOUT ME AND RIE

I am a 40-year-old queer Guatemalan woman living in San Francisco, CA with my wife and two young children. Respectful parenting is my passion!

Dear friends and family: Many of you know of the enormous impact that a parenting approach called RIE has had on my life. RIE (pronounced "rye") was founded by early childhood educator Magda Gerber, based on the teachings of her mentor, Hungarian pediatrician Emmi Pikler. RIE teaches a respectful way of being with infants and children.

"Respect" is an abstract word, and funny as it sounds, I don't think I truly understood what it meant before I started practicing RIE. It wasn't until RIE taught me how to touch my baby's body with respect, how to welcome and hold space for his feelings, how to trust his pace and process, that I finally learned what it means to respect another human being. Through learning to respect others, I learned how to respect myself. The discovery of respect transformed my entire life. It healed my relationship with my children, my family, my friends, my writing, my teaching, and myself. I will never be finished integrating this discovery into my life!

As liberating as the practice of RIE has been, it has also been isolating. I have particularly felt isolated from parents of color. I have found RIE classes, networks, and communities to be overwhelmingly white spaces. However, I know that the movement for respectful parenting is strong in POC communities. I have learned from the work of Black and Latinx leaders who are not specifically RIE educators but who are doing the same work, the work of supporting parents in raising children with respect, and whose practices are grounded in the history of their communities and devoted to their communities' thriving.

RIE is the practice I love. It healed me, healed my family. I believe it has everything to learn from communities of color and I believe it has so much to offer. I am a light-skinned, privileged Latinx immigrant, and right now I am, like many others, working to understand my own role in the oppression of Black life. The purpose of this fundraiser is to help open the door to more Black leadership within RIE.

So, here's my dream: to pay for a Black student of RIE to take the Foundations course.

RIE FOUNDATIONS INFORMATION:
RIE Foundations is the 60-hour professional development course offered by the RIE Center in Los Angeles. (Because of COVID-19, it's now happening online.) I'm taking Foundations right now, and it's an incredible course. Not only is it amazing, but its completion makes a student eligible to be considered for further RIE training. A student who completes the RIE Practicum and Internship can become a RIE Associate and teach RIE in their community.

FUNDRAISING GOAL AND COSTS:
My target goal is $1,500, which is the cost of Foundations tuition and materials. It breaks down like this:

Tuition: $1,295
Required Books: $97.85
Shipping & Handling of Books: $18
Materials: $60
Anything I Forgot: $30

MY COMMITMENTS:
* I will reach out to a Black person who is a leader in the field of respectful parenting and in their community, and ask them to nominate a recipient for this scholarship.

* I will keep every donor updated on my search for a scholarship recipient and will provide proof of the funds having been spent as promised.

* I will purchase all books at the RIE Center, the nonprofit dedicated to preserving and teaching Magda Gerber's work.

* If I don't need the "extra" $30, I will spend it on two recommended (but not required) books.

ANY DONATION AMOUNT MAKES A DIFFERENCE:
Thank you for considering donating! This is the very first time I have ever started a fundraiser. I care passionately about this cause and I'm really scared of failing, but my tremendous gratitude for everything RIE has brought me is giving me the courage to click the "Complete fundraiser" button! I am so hugely grateful for any amount you can give!
