Karen Powers-Davis has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. She is a music teacher at Hamilton Heights and New Franklin Elementary Schools. She is also an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Chambersburg, PA. She is a mother and a step-mother to a total of five children, some of which are still at home. Her husband Mark is self-employed and works from their home.
Karen has faced much adversity over her lifetime. She was born with a hip impairment, which over the years has required her to use a wheel chair. Up until now she has been able to use her legs and her upper body strength to place her wheelchair in and out of her vehicle by herself. After her double mastectomy and breast reconstruction surgeries anticipated to occur after her chemotherapy treatments this fall, she will be unable to do this. It has become necessary for the family to purchase a used minivan with a lift, so Karen can function on her own as much as possible.
Handicapped vehicles are much more expensive than normal vehicles. Our goal, as of now, is $15,000. This is the estimated cost to ease the financial burden, at least through Karen’s cancer treatment. But, this goal is not even half the price of the vehicle. She will be on medical leave with half pay during her treatment. Although she is grateful for at least half of her teaching compensation, the family will be facing financial hardship until she is able to return to work. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to alleviate some of the family burden by helping to pay for the handicapped accessible minivan?
Karen is a very hard working and spiritual person. So far she has only asked for “Prayer Warriors.” Please continue to keep Karen and her family in your prayers and consider donating to this very worthwhile cause. Thank you so much.
