VoteSmart 2019 is about taking the tactical voting message to a wider range of people – people who are open to voting tactically, but who may not know much about it.
Some potential tactical voters may not be interested in Brexit, but they might be open to voting tactically for different reasons. We need to reach these people and speak their language.
From the elderly to parents of school children, from climate change activists to specific business sectors, we’ve worked out who they are and how to get the right message to them – focusing especially on 20 seats where we know tactical voting can have the biggest impact.
Why VoteSmart?
VoteSmart 2019 brings together advice from national tactical voting sites to give voters the full facts on the options in their constituency. This neutral overview approach was road-tested during the 2017 election, and it works.
How will we do it?
The VoteSmart campaign will use a special tried and trusted technique called “microtargeting”.
This means we will advertise online in lots of different ways to very specific types of voters who we think might not be considering voting tactically this December - and we will use lots of messages specifically designed to appeal to them based on what we know about how they think. We will do this only in areas where we know we can make a difference and change the outcome of the election.

VoteSmart: what do we need to supercharge the tactical vote in the general election?
In 2017, over 6.5 million people voted tactically but just 75 votes would have given Theresa May her majority.
