For 20 years,
neighbors of Portland’s historic Sunnyside neighborhood have come together every year to re-paint the huge flower at the Sunnyside Piazza located at the intersection of SE 33rd & Yamhill,
one block off of Belmont St. This grassroots effort has become a space for artistic expression and community building. While our city and neighborhood quickly changes and evolves, the sunflower is always there to greet and welcome us home.
In 2019, the City of Portland started massive sewer repair work,
cutting right through the middle of Sunnyside Piazza. The sunflower is completely worn off (first time ever, to this extent) and we have lost most of the native plants at the intersection. A full restoration of the iconic sunflower and intersection is needed in 2020.
The 2020 Sunnyside Piazza Community Event is tentatively planned for Memorial Day Weekend: May 23-24, 2020
. More details TBA.
This event also celebrates Sunnyside Piazza’s 20th year anniversary!
We need all the help we can get to bring Sunnyside Piazza back to life. Please consider donating to the 2020 restoration efforts and volunteering your time that week to help us make this happen. All donations are tax-deductible!
