Summits in Solidarity is a hiking initiative for racial justice that anyone can participate in from any location in the world. Our mission is dismantle white supremacy in hikers and hiking culture, foster connections that support emergence of a new, anti-racist outdoors community, and raise funds for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) justice organizations.

Learn more about our movement, join us on hike day, check out our anti-racist hiker resources here!

This year, we are raising funds for the NH PANTHER  Black Excellence Fund and Storytelling Project and Cowasuck Band of the Pennacook Abenaki People /COWASS North America's work to save and preserve sacred Indigenous spaces. 100% of funds  we raise will be split evenly between these two recipients on December 31st, 2021. COWASS Federal 501(c)3 #: 22-3229024. NH PANTHER is in the process of acquiring a fiscal agent who will receive funds on their behalf; ID coming soon.

New Hampshire is one of the three whitest states in the country and we have very little support for projects aimed at uplifting Black, Indigenous, and people of color. If you can, please donate and fundraise to help turn these project proposals into realities!

More about The Cowasuck Band’s work to save and preserve Indigenous sacred places, including the White Mountains of NH:

The Cowasuck Band of the Pennacook-Abenaki People is a band of Indigenous people whose ancestors lived on the land now known as the state of New Hampshire. The Cowasick have incorporated a Native American Indian nonprofit social and cultural services organization called COWASS North America. They are one of, if not the only, currently active, registered Indigenous 501(c)3 nonprofits. in NH. COWASS has been doing critical policy work on Indigenous rights and saving/preserving Indigenous sacred spaces, both locally and nationally, for over 20 years. Check out their website , partner page IndigenousNH  , and ArcGIS story map of Indigenous New Hampshire to learn more about their work.

Paul and Denise Pouliot, leaders of the Cowsuck Band and COWASS North America.

The IndigenousNH ArcGIS story map  is part of a larger project to reframe New Hampshire’s history from an Indigenous perspective.

More about the Black Excellence Fund and Storytelling Project:

This year, Summits in Solidarity is the primary fundraiser for the NH PANTHER Black Excellence Fund and Storytelling Project  inagural recipients: Shawtel Allen-Burdette, 17, EMT Trainee, of Concord, NH, and Keagan Supple , 18, Freeskier, of Brentwood, New Hampshire.

The Black Excellence Fund and Storytelling Project is organized by the grassroots education and civil rights group NH PANTHER. The goal of this fund is to provide material support in the form of charitable grants to young (under 35) Black and BIPOC individuals across all disciplines who are striving to embody excellence against the tides of systemic oppression(s). By providing this support, we seek to enable these young people to realize dreams, to inspire other dreams, and to author the stories of the future they will inhabit. We will highlight recipients of this support as they lean into the power of self-representation through storytelling and social media, and by facilitating community events to spotlight these individuals. While we are focused on supporting Black youth and excellence, because we recognize the intersectionality inherent in the movement for Black lives, young people from all backgrounds, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, ability, or background are welcome to reach out to us to participate. When we support Black excellence, we all benefit.

ABOUT KEAGAN

In his own words, Keagan’s goals are, “to make the World Cup Circuit in Slopestyle or Halfpipe skiing, and also to inspire more diversity in the sport of freeskiing. As a Black young adult, I am one of the only people of color participating in skiing at the professional level, and it is rare to see someone else who looks like me on the hill. During the 2021 season, I placed 9th in the Copper Mountain Rev Tour and I placed 1st in the Futures Tour at Winter Park. The 2021 season was short [due to the pandemic]; I was only able to compete at three venues. When I am not able to ski, my hobbies include mountain biking, trampolining, and skateboarding.”

Through the Black Excellence Fund and Storytelling Project, Keagan will receive a charitable grant to aid him as he pursues his goals. Additionally, NH Panthers will continue to highlight Keagan in the coming months as they provide a platform to showcase his achievements, learn about his dreams and his experiences, and listen to his story.

ABOUT SHAWTEL

Shawtel Allen-Burdette, 17, of Concord, New Hampshire, is the second Black Excellence Fund and Storytelling Participant!

In her own words, Shawtel is, “a dancer, a choir student, a mentee and a Leader-in-training for the Circle Program. I am also one of three African American students in my emergency services program this year. As I look back onto my younger self, I’m honestly amazed because when I was younger, I was in a bad bus accident. My Nana was told that I’d lose all my memory and be in a vegetable like state, but I proved everyone wrong and now will soon be able to help others on their worst day. Next year I plan to go to the Fire Academy and to take EMT classes to get all my certifications, as well as attending my senior year at Concord High School. At the end of my senior year I plan to apply to the Air Force Academy to become an Air Force firefighter. I couldn’t have gotten to where I am today without the support from my Nana, my Papa, and the Circle Program. They showed me that as long as I put my mind to it and really try, I can achieve anything, and that no dream of mine is too big; I’m proud to be a young African American woman.”

Through the BEF&SP, Shawtel will receive a charitable grant to aid her as she pursues her goals. Additionally, we will continue to highlight Shawtel in the coming months as we provide a platform to showcase her achievements, learn about her dreams and experiences, and listen to her story.
