SummitED High School Mentoring

Donation protected

The vast majority of high school students never set effective educational or professional goals, nor develop a plan to achieve them. The time investment critically needed for high school student individual development, academic goal setting, and planning provided by a guide or mentor does not happen.

SummitED was founded to help address the guidance-gap problem.

SummitED provides near-peer mentorship to high school students. Near-peer mentorship is a unique coaching relationship in which the mentor and mentee are close in age. Backed by research funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, near-peer mentorship is considered one of the most effective methods to support students.

SummitED is a small social enterprise that provides near-peer mentorship to high school students. We do this by hiring exceptional recent university graduates to mentor at-need high school students. We hire recent graduates to amplify our impact: hiring recent graduates enables them to simultaneously pay off tuition expenses and distill the wealth of knowledge they received throughout their college experience to high school students.

Our goal is to raise scholarship funds to provide near-peer mentorship to five at-need students without access to proper guidance, accountability, and advice.

Even a small donation of $5, would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

FAQ

What percentage of my donation is used for student mentorship?

All of it! 100% of your donation enables SummitED guides to mentor at-need high school students. More specifically, 99% of the donation is used to hire recent high-performing university graduates to mentor at-need high school students. In the process, this also helps university graduates cover expensive tuition and loans. 1% of the donation goes to SummitED infrastructure maintenance fees (e.g. website hosting).

What is the mentorship process like?

Our guides meets with the high school student mentee on a bi-weekly basis for approximately 45 minutes to an hour per session. The guide also often encourages and regularly checks-in on mentees in-between sessions. Please see our guide reviews for more specific impacts of SummitED’s near-peer mentorship.

Who specifically receives the funding?

The SummitED guide will receive donation funds in exchange for 1:1 mentorship of an at-need high school student. It costs around $100/month for effective 1:1 mentorship. This enables our guides to invest quality time and attention into every high school mentee. At minimum, our guides will spend 26 hours per year (1560 minutes) meeting 1:1 with the student mentee.

Traditionally, mentorship is limited to families who can afford the mentorship fees. Sponsoring a student or donating enables SummitED to mentor at-need students whose families cannot afford the mentorship fees.

What does “at need” high school student mean?

A student who otherwise would not receive effective guidance from a school counselor or mentor, and whose parents cannot afford SummitED’s mentorship fees. Unfortunately, there are millions of students in the U.S., desperately needing effective guidance. We cannot serve all these students. But we can make a measurable, transformative impact in the lives of students we do mentor.
