Expanding Summit's Comp Sci Options

According to Code.org, 71% of all new STEM jobs are in computing yet only 8% of STEM graduates are in Computer Science. Clearly programming a computer is a skill that is not held by enough people in our society.

Our goal is to give students at our school the opportunity to build these skills by providing many entry points into this field.  We currently offer an introductory course and an Advanced Placement course, but the students want more!  The students need more! Exciting new opportunities that we want to offer include a Dynamic Website and Computer Gaming strand as well as a Digital Electronics and Robotics strand.

Our ask is for a fully equipped computer lab that is dedicated to our computer science program.  Currently, our computer science courses are filling in other teachers' rooms while they are not teaching.  With just one more additional class, we will have no place to go.  We had to turn students away from joining the introductory course this year as a result of the lack of lab space. We also don’t have the equipment needed to offer a digital electronics strand, an essential part of understanding the computer science curriculum.

The goal is to create an additional lab for the 2018-2019 school year.  The lab will consist of:
25 laptop computers x $1000 each: $25,000
Digital Electronic Equipment : $10,000

Staff Training - $5000

Our students are so excited about this computer science program.  Creating a lab that is dedicated solely to exploring this field would make their studies even more focused and valuable.  As teachers, this lab would give us the chance to create projects that do not need to be transported from one room to the other.  This lab would give us a dedicated space to build electronics and test them. This lab would be a central hub for invention and exploration; a key element for reaching the stars!

This year we are currently serving about 150 students.  However, increasing the lab space will allow more students to join the program.  Our estimates show that, with these new courses, student interest in the program will grow to serve approximately 300 students next year. Imagine the possibilities for the future… Also, by offering a pathway of study that gives a broad understanding for computer science and its implications for social issues we will be able to pique the interest of our underrepresented populations.
