Summer's story
Summer was born a healthy baby girl, August 1, 2011. She was our second child. Being that she was our second child, we knew what to look for, for growth and development. Around 5 months old, we noticed that she wasn't even sitting well in her high chair and other sitting toys. She was leaning to the left with her left arm always at her side. We took her to the doctors and her doctor said with a little physical therapy her left arm will be working. After getting early intervetion to look at her they said she will be getting OT and PT. After talking to my friend about Summer, she was telling me about her friends daughter had simaler thing going on and they did an MRI on her head. We talked to Summers doctor about getting an MRI on her head, to see if anything happened to her. A week later she got an MRI on her head. The neurologist told us that Summer had a stroke. They couldn't pin point when it happened. After viewing the MRI the doctor said that the stroke affected her left arm/hand and both her legs/feet. Then the diagnosis came......Cerebral Palsy. 8 months old with cerebral palsy. Didn't hit me at that point how hard things were going to be. Therapies and doctors appointments were all we did. At 13 months old Summer got her first pair of AFO's (leg braces). The very first time we put them on, she was so happy to be standing (with lots of support). At two years and 7 months old, (2013) we got her a costomized stroller. It was great and she sat nice and supportive in it and it even fold down to get in the car. They told us that the stroller will last for 5 years because it grows with her. Well she grew faster then we thought. Present time, we are now in the process of getting a power wheelchair. Couple reasons for a power wheelchair is because she is wanting to be more independent and not having good use with her left arm/hand, power was the way to go. Only problem with a power wheelchair it's about 300 lbs. Way too heavy to pick up and put in the car. Right now we have a SUV with no hitch. Our only option is getting an inside chair lift. It would be anchored down on the floor in the back. Only way to get this lift is out of pocket. Medical insurance will be covering the power wheelchair. Please help any way you can. The only way we can take the wheelchair home is to have this left. This power wheelchair will help our daughter gain the independence that she is needing. Thanks for reading Summer's story.
