So many people in the region have gone their entire life without ever seeing an eye doctor. As a result, a multitude of eye diseases, that can be easily treated in the United States, have gone undiagnosed for years. As an Ophthalmologist, specializing in the treatment of such eye disease like Macular Edema, Macula Degeneration, Glaucoma, and Sickle Cell Retinopathy. I've made it my medical mission, to help, so they can keep or regain their vision. <img class="not-resizeable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/37220570_1550678672535691_r.jpeg" alt="" width="100%" />￼￼￼ I was born and raised in the Republic of Gambia and graduated from Harvard Medical School. I have a successful practice in South Florida. But, during a recent visit to my homeland, I became acutely aware of the severe lack of availability of eye care in the area. From that visit, a deep desire to help the families of The Gambia developed. I wanted to give back. To help those who wouldn't normally receive medical treatment.  Our vision is such a fundamental part of our livelihood.  Yet, it’s so easy for someone with an unchecked eye disease to lose it. But, there are many treatments available to prevent vision loss. Within a couple of months of returning home, I started the non-profit, Eye Care Gambia and set up an Eye Care Clinic in The Republic.  Eye Care Gambia is a non-profit organization, dedicated to bringing quality eye care to the people of The Republic of The Gambia. My team and I dedicate our time to travel to The Gambia throughout the year, providing medical eye care to the area. <img class="not-resizeable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/37220570_1550678109922082_r.jpeg" alt="" width="100%" />￼￼￼ We travel by plane and boat to arrive in The Gambia. When we arrive, we see about 150 patients a day. Word quickly spreads about our arrival and many travel for days to meet us at the clinic.
