In each year approximately one in every five Australians will experience mental illness.
Mental illnesses are the leading cause of disability burden in Australia accounting for an estimated 27% of the total years lost due to disability.
Suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians aged between 15 and 44 and the suicide rate for Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander people is twice as high as non Indigenous people.
Women are more likely to seek help then men for the simple fact that when women get together they are more likely to talk about their feelings. Men are three times more likely to die by suicide than women (however the rate for women has increased in the past decade). Whereas when men get together, they are more likely to talk about football, cars, and going to the pub and think that they are being weak if they talk about thier feelings. When ninfact it is the complete opposite; they're being strong by talking about their feelings and getting the help that they need. That is why one in six men commit suicide.
For every death by suicide, it is estimated that as many as 30 people attempt to end their lives, that is approximately 65,300 suicide attempts each year!!
After battling severe depression for 17 years I attempted to take my life in April 2006. I then spent 3 months on life support and woke up with severe disabilities. My goal now is to as many people as I can going through depression and contemplating suicide to not make the same mistake as I did. There is so much help out there and we all need a Pat hug every day and be asked if we are OK. That is whe we are hosting a Suicide and Bullying Prevention Event to be held at The Lone Star Tavern in Mermaid Waters on the 15th september 2018. The cost of the event is $40 per person, you will also receive a self care pack, canapes will be served, and drins will be available for purchase. There will also be two lucky door prizes, and there will be Gold Coast Speakers on the night.
