Sue East's Playground for St Andrew's Primary

Hi everyone,
As some of you know, just before Christmas, my lovely Auntie Sue lost her battle with cancer at the age of 58. Before she passed away, I told her that I wanted to donate my hair to the Little Princess Trust, a charity who make wigs for children with cancer and other diseases that cause hair loss. But mostly, I wanted to raise money for something of Sue’s choice. Along with my Mum and members of staff from St Andrew’s Church School in Bath (the primary school where Sue was Headteacher for 10 years), Sue decided that she’d like me to raise the money to refurbish the Foundation Stage playground, a space for Nursery and Reception children to play and learn - a project that has been close to her heart.
So, that’s exactly what I’m doing. In February, I’ll be chopping off 12 inches of hair and dying what’s left fuchsia pink- Sue’s favourite colour. (Here's a photo of me, and the hair I'd like to donate)! Alongside the hair donation, the money I intend to raise from this will go towards the refurbishment of the school playground in Sue’s honour.
Sue was a pioneering creative force in primary education. She was at the forefront of the School Without Walls (SWW) programme and regularly shared her expertise on this at a national level. She understood the value of her pupils taking their learning outside of the classroom and into creative and cultural settings in Bath and beyond. She enlisted artists, musicians, designers and academics from universities across the country to collaborate on a spectrum of creative educational initiatives.
Sue also understood the importance of the school’s physical environment and its impact on the wellbeing and academic achievement of each child. The St Andrew’s Green Classrooms report was developed in 2017 by parents who enlisted the help of environmental scientists, architects and local universities. Based on the latest research, it provides guidance on specific and measurable improvements that can be made to every classroom and outdoor space at St Andrews, to promote wellbeing and enhance learning outcomes. The playground refurbishment is part of this strategy and I’d love to see it come to fruition, for Sue.
