Subarachnoid Haemorrhage Recovery

On Sunday 19th August 2018 my Mum collapsed and was taken to A&E in Northampton General Hospital. My brother, Jack was with her at the time and told me upon my arrival that they were doing tests to try and find out the cause of her collapse. They start with the worst case scenario so they began doing brain scans. Myself, my brother and Figgy (my Mums partner) were with her at the time trying to understand what could’ve happened.
We were told she had had a bleed on the brain and needed to be rushed to the Intensive Care Unit in John Ratcliffe Hospital in Oxford as they specialise in the brain. This news was utterly heart breaking and world destroying for the three of us.
As most of my friends know, Jack & I lost our Dad to skin cancer in 2011 so the thought that we would lose our Mum was indescribable.
Once she arrived at Oxford she had a surgery to clot the blood. Once she was returned to the unit she suffered some complications and the surgeon had no other option than to drill holes into her skull to relieve pressure which we were told was a life saving act as they did not have time to take her back to theatre to complete this. We were told the proper name for what she had experienced was a Subarachnoid Haemorrhage.
After this surgery our gorgeous Mum suffered a stroke which was heart breaking for all of us. She had to have a third brain surgery to relieve pressure inside her skull.
The three of us were told the next 10 days were absolutely critical and anything can happen at any time as her organs were all at risk. She had a tracheoptomy which allowed machines to breathe for her.
Every day myself, Jack & Figgy were with her, holding her hand and keeping everything crossed that she would be able to fight through.
10 days went past and she was still stable. After day 10 she truly surprised surgeons & doctors by doing so amazingly well. On the 3rd September she was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit at Northampton General Hospital to continue her recovery. She is making us so proud every day by how well she is doing. Today they put a valve on her tracheotomy tube to allow her to speak to us for the first time in 18 days.
I have started this page because a few people has asked how they can help. We have all been off work since this has happened which is taking its tole as Jack is self employed and I have a limited number of sick days I can take to be with her. We are aware the recovery process for our Mum is not going to be a short one and we don’t know what lies ahead in terms of her capabilities and what we will need to adapt within our home. We need to be with her every step of the way to support and love her.
