We observed first hand how this life-changing can impact an individual not only physically but also psychologically. Not to forget we saw how families were impacted when trying to care for their family members and not knowing how to best meet their needs.

By speaking to these families we were able to better comprehend their struggles and the lack of support they receive.  This incentivated us to research about the devastating impact amputations have on individuals and their families and the support that is currently available to them, however, although we contacted every service in the UK that offered support to non-trauma amputees and found out that obtaining more information about what is out there for people who are undergoing or who have undergone an amputation  was more difficult than we thought. We were not deterred as we believed there was a true gap in the care provided to these individuals and their families. We eventually came in contact with Finding Your Feet - a charity in Glasgow that was founded by quad amputee Corrinne Hutton who lost her hands and feet after contracting septicaemia and we were invited to speak at their monthly gathering where we had a chance to speak to over 20 amputees. We learned a lot about what happens after amputation and when individuals are sent home!

We continued to contact professionals and meet with relevant people in the amputation care pathway and saw that high-quality information was available but needed to be brought together in one place. This led to the creation of our innovative website approach "Stumped!". Stumped! is a website (www.stumped.org.uk) designed to support people with amputations (and their families) and professionals connect and work together to ensure people going through or having had an amputation can access the best care and support available.

The Stumped! website is primarily up and running, with certain parts still “in progress”. We, therefore, welcome anyone with expertise in those areas to join us and help develop a comprehensive and reliable source of information that meets YOUR needs. You can do this by:

Raluca and Pedro are both nursing students who started working on this project in 2016 and the Oxford Brookes Social Entrepreneurship Awards (OBSEA) offered them the ideal platform, funding, and support to grow it to a functioning website. We were joined by Misbah, a computer vision graduate, whose expertise has been crucial in developing the website further.
