Stump Night, a story of the GU 272

Carlos Wayne Scott, a direct descendant of one of the 272 Africans sold by Georgetown University in 1838 wants to produce a two and one half hour stage play that shares your ancestor's story.  It will be called "Stump Night".

Carlos learned through extensive research that his enslaved ancestors would often leave the fields at dark and congregate in the woods, sitting on tree stumps, singing and talking about their desire to be free one day.  All of us can learn from the performance of song, dance and improvisation that brings clarity, racial healing and relief to a nation that is pregnant with hatred and fear today.

Carlos wants to invite everyone to come to a performance in 2019 and beyond to hear the story of the GU272 .  Experience how they coped and survived the cruelty of slavery.

The Stump Night development budget will cover hiring a researcher, playwright, stage director and set designer, etc.   The Stump Night team is ready to begin this important work now but we need your help.  Our development team has reached out to Tony-award winning stage professionals and many others, who are standing by to help us create this project.

We are appreciative of the support of Adam Rothman, a Georgetown University professor and director of doctoral studies in the Department of History in the College. Rothman is an expert in the history of the United States from the Revolution to the Civil War, and in the history of slavery and abolition in the Atlantic world.
