Studying in Rome, NYC & Wash. D.C.

My name is Teresa Ornelas and for those of you who don’t know me I am a junior in high school in Bakersfield, California.

I have worked hard in school and have good grades. I also have multiple AP classes that I am doing well in. I am also a member of the National Honor Society. This spring, I was fortunate enough to be recommended for, and accepted to Brown University’s On Location: Rome summer program.

I never thought an experience like this would be possible for me; it is an opportunity of a lifetime. My parents lost two sons to medical issues and I, as their only living child, want to make them proud.

My family does not have a lot of money as the recession was very hard on us, and my father was forced to go back to school in order to change careers.

The Brown program will allow me to study in Rome for two weeks learning Italian and studying anthropology. Many of the locations we will visit are open to the public but some are exclusive to students in the Brown program. During my time in Italy, I will see Rome, the Amalfi coast, and Pompeii. Due to extensive financial need I was awarded a partial scholarship of $3,500 for the Brown program.

In addition to all this, I was nominated to attend another program through the National Student Leadership Conference. The dates for the two opportunities work out so I can do Rome first and then come home to do nine days in the NSLC which takes place at Georgetown University.

During the NSLC at Georgetown I will study international diplomacy, go to seminars led by international diplomats, and will visit embassies based in Washington DC as well as the US State Department and the US Institute of Peace. The program also takes a trip to New York City where students will visit the United Nations and the Statue of Liberty.

As many of you know, I have dedicated my life to acting, but thus far the financial rewards have not been there. What money I have made has gone back into the cost of going to auditions, head shots, and training.

This is an opportunity to see what else is possible for me in the world. Financially my parents are unable to contribute much to this trip. They are fantastic parents who have sacrificed everything to get me to this point, and I am eternally grateful, but we need help to push me further.

The money I am hoping to raise will primarily pay the substantial cost of the two programs. I will need to buy a professional wardrobe for the Georgetown program. There is also the matter of airfare. If anyone would be kind enough to donate their airline miles to this endeavor please contact my parents directly. I assure you any extra donations will be used for incidental costs of the two trips. Any money above and beyond that I promised to put into my educational fund for college.

Here is a break down:
Brown University’s On Location: Rome
Tuition, Food, Housing:         $2,497          (due 5/25/18)
Airfaire                                           $2,500          (buy by 5/7/18)
Books for Rome program:    unknown      (unknown)

National Student Leadership Conference-Georgetown
Tuition, Food & Housing:      $3,195          (due 5/18/18)
Airfaire:                                          $400              (buy by 6/8/18)

The reason Rome appears cheaper than Georgetown is because of the $3,500 scholarship I was awarded.

We know that many of the people that will see this have their own financial struggles, but anything you can contribute will help and be greatly appreciated.
