Study At Sea

Donation protected
Hey everyone! My name is Ellyn Byrns, I'm 16 years old and I live in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. My goal is to raise funds to support my tuition to complete my Grade 11 year with a high school program aboard a tall ship that sails around the world.

You know how everybody has a dream at least once in their lifetime to just hop on a boat and sail wherever the wind takes them? Well now I have the opportunity to truly go to sea and sail the world, and with your help that opportunity could become a reality!

After a long application and a rigorous selection process, I've been accepted to the 2013-2014 Class Afloat program, which is essentially a high school program aboard a tall ship. Students aboard the S.S Sorlandet will sail around the world to 23 different ports of call and 18 different countries, experiencing new cultures and gaining international perspectives while getting their high school education credits at the same time. It is an opportunity to learn in an entirely new environment and open minds to the world with different views and opinions, and it truly would be a life-changing way to forge new friendships and communities all over the world.

Coming from a small sailing community in Saskatchewan, Canada, the lure of the sea has always held such a pull for me. Growing up in the rolling prairies of our little land-locked province, setting to sea aboard a majestic tall ship is the greatest dream I've ever had, and there's nothing I wouldn't give to be part of such an experience; this is where you come in!

Naturally, the tuition for such a program is a bit steep, though I am confident that with the support from you and your friends, families and communities, I can reach my goal of 25 000$ that remains to be fundraised by the end of the summer.

So send my story around, tell your friends to tell their friends! If this reaches as many as 1 250 people who donate 20$, or even 2 500 people who donate 10$, every little bit helps to achieve my goal. Donations go towards paying tuition, covering required expenses like supplies, uniforms, gear, insurance, etc. Any money that is raised contributes to the professional crew aboard, the amazing faculty that teaches students abroad, and the opportunity for students like me to learn in such an incredible environment. I am confident that if we can expose my story to enough people, it will be the smallest of donations that will make the biggest difference!

Thank you for your support, and remember that every little bit helps, even just spreading my story. If you would like to learn more about the Class Afloat program and the full itinerary for 2013-2014, check out their website at http://www.classafloat.com/.
