Help The 2023 National Championship Civics Team

Last year, South Florida’s Nova Middle School took home the National Title in the academic “We The People” Competition in Washington D.C. It is absolutely amazing and they should be very proud. To get there, they first had to win the State Championship against all Florida middle schools. It is a week long school trip, going by train to Washington DC, with an itinerary of educational stops accounting for every minute of their day. It was the adventure of a lifetime for those who went. 

Sadly, not everyone could, and some of the team members had to stay behind last year. The cost is $1800 per person, which covers transportation to DC and back, the hotel, hall monitors at night, most meals, the $100 competition entry fee per student, a practice room, and the tickets to the museums. The reality is, not every child has the means to cover the costs involved in a trip like that. The school system certainly doesn’t. As the 2024 event approaches, it falls on support from the community to see that none of these talented kids is left behind, and to alleviate the costs to the families whose children are active and excel. 

They’re in the process of trying to scrape up the funds through popcorn sales and whatnot, but they did that last year too and fell short. The total cost for this kind of trip is $70,000 for 38 or 39 kids and two to three chaperones. Can you imagine how much popcorn you have to sell to hit that? I say let’s help these kids out however much we are able so they focus on their studies and getting ready, and so none are left behind this time. If you have the means, I urge you to help in any amount you can. Having active, educated youth ensures a bright future for tomorrow.

This fundraiser is not an affiliate of Nova Middle School. However, ALL of your donations will go to support the students for this event. There are NO amounts being retained as administrative costs. Just a good old fashioned community booster like we used to do every year. Don’t you miss those days? Let’s bring them back!
