As many of you know, I am currently attending Walla Walla University as a mechanical engineering major. Every piece of evidence, whether it be my grades, hobbies, nerdy conversations, or favorite movies point towards my current career path. There is another part of me however, that feels much stronger, and is telling me that none of these careers are where my heart lies. I’m in one place that makes the most sense, the place with the most logical conclusion, and yet another place seems more appealing. If this isn’t what “being called” means, I don’t know what is.
Because of this calling, I have decided to take a year from my college studies and engage in service on one of the Islands in Micronesia. I have accepted this assignment in the Student Missions Program because I want to take a year to serve and have faith in God to direct my paths. I am leaning towards teaching Math or Science, as those are the two subjects I enjoy tutoring the most.
I currently have a baby sister, Aubrey, and a Rouse sister on the way too. Many of you know that Aubrey’s surgery is coming up on March 14, and that it’s not a cheap one. Coupled with my school tuition, it is a significant financial hurtle for my family. I have started a Go Fund Me to help pay for the cost of going on the mission trip, and your donations mean a lot to me and my family.
There are several costs associated with this experience: travel costs, visa costs, mailing costs, living costs while I’m out, and the list goes on. Each year, the student missionaries are required to raise the money needed. We do that by working in the community for donations, asking for donations from mission supporters, working with our local churches for help, and by earning as much as we can in addition to the money given. The funds are used to get us to our location, make sure we’re cared for while we’re there, and then bring us home. A portion of the fundraised money ($500) goes toward training and support offered through the Student Missions office. Any excess funds I raise help other SMs to go, provide emergency aid, as well as help support SMs in the field.
