On March 10, 2018 doctors discovered a brain tumor in 4 year old Ian Staal. He was soon diagnosed with Medulloblastoma category 3, an aggressive cancer that had quickly spread through his central nervous system. Over the past six months Ian has had major brain surgery, 6 weeks of proton beam radiation therapy and is in the middle of intensive chemo therapy.

We are overwhelmed by an outpouring of positive support and kind sentiments. We know Ian is in the thoughts and prayers of our friends and family all over the world. Many people are asking how they can help. We have set up an account to help Ian battle cancer.
We are grateful that most of Ian’s medical costs are covered in the Netherlands. However, not every cost is covered and we have felt the strain of managing our family while travelling throughout the country for Ian’s treatment, and putting work on hold to focus on his care. Additional costs include: nutrition, accommodating Ian in our home, pain management, and preparing financially for the best possible rehabilitation and educational support.
Ian is getting his nutrition through an NG tube. An FDA approved whole foods feeding tube formula, Liquid Hope, is not available here in the Netherlands and is not covered by insurance here. Clinical studies show Liquid Hope improves gut health and reduces inflammation. The cost of providing Liquid Hope for the duration of Ian’s cancer treatment is $12,000 plus international shipping. We feel like Ian’s nutrition is one of the ways we can most help him. Making sure he has the best fuel to supplement his doctors’ care is essential to us.
Ian’s most encouraging steps have happened in our home, with just his family. At home Ian can exercise a little control over his new, chaotic world. Accommodating Ian in our home includes expenses to prepare/maintain our environment to care for a cancer patient.
We are asking for help financing the best proven and tested alternative treatments to address the insomnia, digestive distress, nausea, and loss of appetite that are side-effects of Ian’s cancer treatment. We are doing all that we can to provide Ian with less invasive and more effective pain management and nutrition alternatives.
Finally, once Ian's treament is finished he will have a long road to recovery. We are asking for financial help in preparation for the additional therapy and support made necessary as a result of (long term) damage caused by his life-saving treatment.
