Isla was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) on July 24, 2019. Because she has been diagnosed as “standard risk” (neither high nor low), she will undergo 5 rounds of chemotherapy- each with a one month inpatient stay at the hospital. She’s a fierce fighter with a huge heart and a sly smile. Thanks for walking on our journey with us as we (with Isla at the lead) kick cancer to the curb.
We are raising money to help relieve some of the financial burden associated with Isla's immediate and continued care. A few examples of this are:1. Nutrition
We are exploring various avenues that would support Isla’s body as she undergoes chemo. We not only want her to survive but to thrive after this ordeal is over. We've decided to begin supplementing Isla's nutrition with Nourish by Functional Formularies
- a plant-based, whole foods feeding tube formula created by Michael's aunt, Robin Gentry McGee. It's the first formula of its kind and has been FDA approved and adopted by Cancer Treatment Centers of America as well as Cincinnati hospitals. We will be giving her this formula mixed in smoothies and soups as she is still eating well. In the event that Isla's appetite diminishes or she is unable to eat, she could then receive it via feeding tube. 2. Medical Bills
We've become increasingly aware that our high-deductible health plan will leave us with extremely large medical bills that we have to cover up to the point where insurance will kick in - for at least 2019 and 2020. Once she kicks this, there will also be expenses for Isla's continued care in the years to come. We are hoping to raise some funds to help take some of this burden off.3. Childcare Expenses
We will have increased costs as we cover the care of Sawyer outside of the school hours during our hospital stay. 4. Future Therapies
Once Isla is in remission, she will likely undergo additional therapy or medical care as a result of the chemo’s affects on her body. This will remain a big unknown until we are out of this phase, but it’s a reality that we should be prepared for. **We will update our monetary goal when we receive more clarity on the treatment options and costs of these avenues. We are very much in the beginning phase of this journey, please have grace and understanding with us as our needs may change going forward. Isla's Caring Bridge page
