Stroke Recovery Help for Lori

Stroke is an unforgiving attack on the brain which can cause a life to change in an instant. Our mom, sister, aunt, and friend, Lori, had an ischemic stroke on October 15, 2017. She was checked in to North Cypress Medical Center where she spent a week in the Intensive Care Unit followed by 3 days in a private room before being transferred to Health South Rehabilitation Hospital for three weeks.
Everyone who knows her will tell you that Lori would do anything to help out her friends or family. Lori could strike up a conversation anywhere – she didn’t meet too many strangers. She was a planner and organizer and always had a shoulder to lean on when needed. Lori is currently experiencing aphasia and has no use of her right arm or leg. She went from being a voracious reader and master wordsmith to now having to relearn the alphabet, names of common objects, family members’ names, numbers and colors.
At the time of her stroke, Lori was working in the Special Education Department for Cypress Fairbanks ISD, where she had worked for almost eleven years. She, most likely, will not be able to return to work.
Lori will need ongoing, intensive physical, occupational and speech therapies. The massive hospital and rehabilitation bills are overwhelming for the family, especially now that work income is no longer available. Even with insurance, out of pocket expenses are excessive. The following is a partial list of the added costs that have occurred since the stroke:
• Insurance Deductible
• Medical Out of Pocket must be met
• Doctor Visit Co-Pay (which will change in January to “meet deductible” before there is a co-pay)
• Weekly Therapy Session costs (Plus gasoline costs to and from)
• Medical Equipment for the home (Wheelchair, walker, hospital bed, grab bars, leg and arm braces, etc.)
• Prescription Medications
• Ongoing Home Health care (future item)
• Stair Lift (future item to gain access to her bedroom and bathroom upstairs)
