Because a mastectomy changes such a large part of your identity as a woman, and requires a minimum of 6-8 weeks without exercising your arms, and even longer if there was cancer treatment. After all, that time is required to live a very sedentary life, once the surgeon clears you for exercise all you want to do is try to be stronger than before. I underwent a double mastectomy a little over 2 years ago, and the recovery was very hard on my identity. As an athlete, I was nervous about what my life would look like after the mastectomy, and looked everywhere for women like me to see how recovery was going to be. I was unable to find women who had regained their former strength and fitness, or I was told to just be patient. I was worried for my outlook. After you finish with physical therapy, there is still a long ways to go to be able to return to physical activity. I decided to train myself after cleared by my surgeon and PTs, and have regained my former strength and power, and continue to progress beyond where I was before the mastectomy.
I want to be able to help other women going through a similar experience that can not afford strength training (that I was able to provide to myself). This training will be after they have been cleared by a physical therapist or surgeon to work with me (the strength coach).
I hoping to make this an ongoing thing, this is just the first iteration. Once the funds are raised, this money will be used as grants for 10 women to each receive 3 months of training from BodyenRoute bodyenroute.com . I received a small grant during my recovery and I want other women to get a similar gift, that will help them gain back their strength and identity.
I have written a blog about my experience here: https://www.bodyenroute.com/the-goods Photo by Mary Mecklenburg
