Every cancer story has something in common: The day everything changed.
For my little nephew, Strahinja Maksimovic, this day was July 9th, 2017. Strahinja suddenly did not feel well on a hot summer Saturday after playing with his friends. He came home complaining of a headache, and later that evening became sick. He was taken to the ER by his father and his mother, who was actually 8 months pregnant at the time. They initially thought that it must have been too much sun exposure that made him sick. But this otherwise healthy, happy 6-year-old boy was suddenly diagnosed, three days later, with anaplastic meduloblastoma, a malignant childhood brain tumour. No illness, no warning. Less than one month after Strahinja's devastating diagnosis, Strahinja underwent brain surgery, celebrated his 7th birthday in the hospital, began radiation therapy and met his little brother, Milos (born August 13, 2017), whom he adores now. This young family has been struck by this disease, with Strahinja's parents being unable to work, struggling to meet ends, and having to take one child to another city for cancer treatments daily while taking care of their newborn at home. Daily trips to radiation therapy ended in October, and after a little break, Strahinja has recently started his first round of chemotherapy in Belgrade. The medical expenses endured by the family of a very sick child are often overwhelming. Your donations will help Strahinja's family (who have limited financial resources) to pay for basic needs, doctor's appointments and daily travel expenses as Strahinja undergoes his cancer treatments.
