Storm Arwen destroys outdoor classroom at Pembroke Park Primary school

Children returned to school after the weekend when Storm Arwen had taken hold and our outdoor classroom has fallen victim which had been destroyed in the high winds.

The children were devastated their wooden open sided barn had been flipped onto its roof and damaged beyond repair. We have an amazing PTFA however we know the target of £10,000 within 6 months for a new outside classroom will be require mammoth effort and hopefully this can be from the links the school has built within the community.

The outdoor class room has allowed outdoor play in the fresh air and freedom which has been essential for children's emotional, social and personal well-being. Since the beginning of the pandemic this classroom has helped us assist with the covid-19 restrictions. The children have enjoyed using the barn for so many aspects of their learning - and what’s slightly ironic is that it’s provided a shelter from the wind for them. It’s the only covered area we’ve had outside the school.
The outdoor classroom has enabled the children to play all year round. The barn provides an additional space for play at lunch and break times including dressing up clothes and turning into super heroes.

Our site manager Les Jacobs found the devastated structure when he walked around the school on Saturday.

"I wanted to check on the building over the weekend just in case there had been any damage after Friday night’s high winds, but I was shocked to see the outdoor classroom on its head on the other side of the field. It’s a pretty solid structure and to see it buckled and completely broken is such a shame for the children."

Headteacher Sara Wilkinson was also surprised and saddened to see the classroom.

Work will now begin to fund raise for a new outdoor classroom and the school is launching an appeal from today. The Pembroke Park Primary School Choir is already booked to sing Christmas songs and carols in the market place in Salisbury each Tuesday afternoon until the end of term. This Tuesday they will be carrying collecting buckets for donations.
