Boots on the Ground: The Twin Cities No Kill Story

Donation protected

For years, I have worked to end needless killing in animal shelters. I have been largely successful and have helped many open-admission animal shelters across the USA become No Kill. When I began this effort, 20 years ago, animal shelters in and around the greater Twin Cities Metro Area were routinely killing nearly 50% of the animals they took in.

Over the years, many things have changed. For the last several years all of the shelters in the Twin Cities have had save rates of more than 90%, except one: Minneapolis Animal Care and Control (MACC). This fundraiser was originally initiated to call attention to MACC's failures and to fund a documentary film about MACC's resistance to change, even as the shelters around them did.

Shortly after this fundraiser was launched, along with the companion website https://fixmpls.org, MACC achieved its first-ever save rate of more than 90%. Statistics for the month of October, 2019 showed a save rate of 93%! Even better news is that for November the save rate was even better, 96%, making MACC one of the top performing animal shelters in the nation.

We are hopeful this success will continue as we move forward with our film. If MACC maintains this save rate, it will effectively make the Greater Twin Cities Metro area the largest No Kill community in the USA. This film will be the story of how that happened. If they don't it will be the story of how the community almost got there, but failed, due to resistance at MACC. Either way, it will be an important, inspiring and very empowering film to help other communities end killing in their animal shelters. Please show your support! Thanks in advance!
