My name is Micheal Thomas, I am a 4th year medical student at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. I grew up in Clarendon, Jamaica and came to the United States in 2012 with the goal of one day becoming a doctor.
For the past 3 years of medical school, I have been paying for my education with private student loans with my uncle as a cosigner. I do not qualify for any federal financial aid as an international student and so I only had this option to cover my expenses. This summer my uncle and I reapplied for the final student loan that would see me graduate as an M.D in June 2021, however, he was denied as my cosigner and so I was left without a way to pay to finish my education.
I have reached out to other family members who tried to assist me, but they were not approved as cosigners. I sought out other potential cosigners, but I was ultimately unable to find anyone to cosign for me. As a result of being unable to secure a cosigner, I am now left to seek alternative ways to pay for this final year. Therefore, I am reaching out to everyone, in hopes that you will see my plea and come to my aid.
I am a focused, driven individual who makes it my priority to help those who I can, hence why I came into the field of medicine. My goal is not to just become a doctor, but to become a doctor that can provide care to people who look like me, and to those in the under-served population. My goal is to partner with individuals in the United States and my country of Jamaica, to improve the structure of healthcare to better serve those who are disadvantaged and underrepresented in the current medical system. I need your help to do that.
The total amount I need for the year is approximately $65,000, However, what I am asking for is help to cover my tuition costs. The cost for the Fall 2020 semester is $21,036.15 and it is the same amount for the Spring 2021 semester. If I can cover the cost of my tuition, then I will be able to finish medical school and would be able to work towards my goals.
Your help would mean the world to not just me, but to my family and friends who made so many sacrifices to get me to this point.
