Achter ogenschijnlijk onschuldige ontmoetingen met toeristen schuilt een realiteit die maar weinig mensen écht zien. En terwijl het bewustzijn groeit, ontstaat er tegelijkertijd een nieuwe, misleidende “ethische” werkelijkheid waarin niet alles is wat het lijkt.</strong>

<div><strong>Gelukkig zijn er ook mensen die hun leven wijden aan het redden van deze dieren - gedreven door pure intentie en compassie. Mensen die laten zien dat het anders kan. Juist dit soort mensen hebben we nu harder nodig dan ooit.</strong>

<div><strong>Over “The Last Ride”:</strong>

<div>Deze documentaire begint bij een onschuldige droom die velen herkennen: <strong>dieren redden. </strong>

<div><strong>Een droom die Agnes en Manouk ook hadden. Zij zijn twee Nederlandse vrouwen die hun leven wijden aan het redden van olifanten met een zwaar verleden.</strong>

<div>Maar wanneer die droom stap voor stap werkelijkheid wordt, blijkt hij complexer dan gedacht. Dieren redden betekent je staande houden in een wereld waarin economische belangen, cultuur en toerisme diep verweven zijn.

<div>In Azië, waar olifanten al eeuwenlang symbool staan voor kracht en spiritualiteit, worden ze nog steeds ingezet als toeristische attractie. Wat voor reizigers voelt als een bijzondere ervaring, betekent voor veel olifanten een leven van controle, training en het verlies van hun natuurlijke gedrag.

<div><strong>En ondanks groeiend bewustzijn neemt het aantal olifanten in gevangenschap nog altijd toe</strong>. Volgens het meest recente rapport van World Animal Protection neemt het totale aantal olifanten dat wordt ingezet voor toerisme toe: momenteel leven 2.849 olifanten in gevangenschap op 236 toeristische locaties in Thailand, een stijging van 73 procent sinds 2010.

<div>Agnes en Manouk besloten niet langer toe te kijken. Met beperkte middelen en jaren van onzekerheid bouwden zij aan de Somboon Legacy Foundation. Een plek waar olifanten niet worden aangeraakt, bereden of ingezet, maar simpelweg mogen leven.

<div>Waar rust, ruimte en natuur centraal staan. Waar ze weer olifant kunnen zijn.

<div>Het verhaal van Agnes en Manouk laat zien hoe een kinderdroom: dieren redden - kan uitgroeien tot een levensmissie.

<div>Het laat zien dat verandering ontstaat door moedige keuzes, ook als het moeilijk wordt. Deze documentaire gaat uiteindelijk niet alleen over olifanten, maar over ons allemaal. Over de keuzes die we maken als reiziger én als mens.

<div>Daarnaast leven we in een tijd waarin veel mensen “goed” willen doen, maar overspoeld raken en steeds minder weten wat dat nog écht betekent. Binnen het olifantentoerisme zien we dit op een pijnlijke manier terug: er wordt misbruik gemaakt van goedbedoelende mensen.

<div><strong>Wat gebeurt er met de documentaire als deze klaar is?</strong>
</div>
<div>Hoe meer we er samen voor kunnen zorgen dat dit verhaal wordt gedeeld, hoe meer mensen de boodschap van de film ontvangen. Dit is, samen met Agnes en Manouk, <strong>onze grootste wens: bewustwording creëren. </strong>

<div>We willen de film uitbrengen via <strong>een filmfestival</strong>, daarna volgen <strong>persoonlijke vertoningen</strong> met een Q&amp;A. En we zouden het geweldig vinden als <strong>lokale filmhuizen</strong> de film (tijdelijk) willen vertonen. Na deze fysieke vertoningen onderzoeken we een <strong>online release</strong>, voor blijvende zichtbaarheid en impact.

<div>Ook speelt educatie een belangrijke rol. We willen de film vertonen op <strong>scholen en instellingen</strong>, gecombineerd met workshops en gesprekken voor jongeren.

<div>This documentary begins with an innocent dream many people recognize: <strong>rescuing animals</strong>

<div><strong>A dream that Agnes and Manouk also had. They are two Dutch women who dedicate their lives to rescuing elephants with a heavy past.</strong>
</div>

</div>
<div>But as that dream gradually becomes reality, it turns out to be more complex than expected. Rescuing animals means standing your ground in a world where economic interests, culture, and tourism are deeply intertwined.

<div>In Asia, where elephants have for centuries symbolized strength and spirituality, they are still used as tourist attractions. What feels like a meaningful experience for travelers often means a life of control, training, and the loss of natural behavior for the elephants.

<div>And despite growing awareness,<strong> the number of elephants in captivity continues to rise</strong>. According to the latest report by World Animal Protection, the total number of elephants used for tourism is actually increasing: currently 2,849 elephants live in captivity across 236 tourist venues in Thailand, a rise of 73 percent since 2010.

<div>Agnes and Manouk decided not to look away any longer. With limited resources and years of uncertainty, they built the Somboon Legacy Foundation.

<div>The more we can ensure together that this story is shared, the more people will receive its message. This is, together with Agnes and Manouk, our greatest wish: to create awareness.

<div>We aim to release the film through <strong>film festivals</strong>, followed by <strong>personal screenings</strong> with Q&amp;As. We would also love for <strong>local cinemas</strong> to (temporarily) screen the film.

<div>After these physical screenings, we will explore an <strong>online release</strong>, for long-term visibility and impact.

<div>Education also plays an important role. We want to screen the film in <strong>schools and institutions</strong>, combined with workshops and conversations for young people.
