Stop Donkey Slaughter-Ebay, Amazon

Donation protected
Amazon and Ebay are profiting from a donkey holocaust occurring in many parts of the world to make a Chinese product call donkey hide gelatin, or "ejiao".

Help me expose them! World Donkey Day is May 8th, which would be a good time to run newspaper ads (details below). You can contribute as little as $5 and you can do so anonymously.

Ejiao is made by boiling the hides of slaughtered donkeys. Products using ejiao have been advertised in China as a cure-all, for everything from anti-aging to virility. An expanding middle class in that country has resulted in a demand for up to 10 million donkey skins a year.

China is running low on donkeys, so they are sourcing hides from Africa, the Middle East, South  America, and Mexico . People in developing countries still rely on donkeys, making this a human welfare issue as well as an animal welfare issue. Black market theft and barbaric slaughter methods are on the rise.

Ejiao has its roots in Traditional Chinese medicine, but the scale of animal carnage in this case is unprecedented. These numbers are not sustainable if the donkey is to survive as a species. Products containing donkey hide gelatin are not only sold in China, they can also be found on Amazon and Ebay in great numbers. (Do a search for donkey hide gelatin or ejiao - see for yourself.)

I started a petition urging Ebay and Amazon to stop selling these products. They both have policies against selling items made from endangered species, but there is nothing “official” about the dangers the donkey species is currently undergoing. I have tried multiple avenues to get the facts to and a response from these companies - the most I’ve gotten is that “we don’t provide information about the inner workings of our company. I hope you’ll understand our position.”

I don’t understand their position. These American-based companies should stand up for the humane and sustainable treatment of animals and stop selling these products.

This funding request is to hit Amazon and Ebay where they live – newspaper ads in the areas where they are headquartered. The Seattle Weekly and Metro Silicon Valley have a combined readership of more than half a million. There is also a healthy Chinese population in these areas – I do not want to encourage China-bashing, but it’s possible that they are unaware of this crisis.

If you agree that these companies should stop selling these products and wish to help expose their complicity in an unprecedented animal holocaust, while also raising awareness about this issue, please contribute. You can also add your name to the petition if you haven’t done so yet.

If we get to $530, that will pay for a 1/4 page ad in Metro Silicon. The highest goal  would pay for ads in both publications. If the minimum goal is not reached, or if the goal is exceeded – I will either place larger ads or those funds will be donated to the UK Donkey Sanctuary. (You can see their report and work on this issue here .)

Thank You!
