Stop Bill 212 in Alberta

Donation protected
Stop rodeo from gaining power in Alberta!

Help fight against Alberta's Bill 212 - the Official Sport of Alberta Act. Should it pass, bill 212 will recognize rodeo as Alberta's provincial sport. This fundraiser will aid a group of concerned Albertans who, along with grassroots organization Calgary Animal Save, are organizing a large awareness and action campaign against Bill 212. Your donation will be used to advertise through targeted ads, billboards and print materials, as well as to fund materials needed for our many calls to action.

THANKS TO A GENEROUS DONOR, YOUR DONATION WILL BE DOUBLED (up to $5000)

We have observed strong opposition to this bill in progressive political circles. Our concerns have been echoed by sporting associations, the Alberta Advocate for Persons with Disabilities, women's sporting advocacy groups, animal welfare organizations, and even MLA’s!

Please help us raise awareness, mobilize Albertans, and Stop Bill 212!

We cannot allow Bill 212 to pass. Here's why:

Rodeo Excludes Women: Only 2 of 8 Canadian Professional Rodeo Association events and 1 of 9 events at the Calgary Stampede are women's events.

Animal Welfare: Since 1986, 105 animals have been killed in events at Alberta’s most famous rodeo, the Calgary Stampede. This does not account for animals killed during practice sessions, nor rodeo’s countless collateral deaths.

Accessibility: On a spectrum of participation, rodeo finds itself extremely inaccessible for persons with disabilities, and therefore does not align with the Red Deer Declaration For the Prevention of Harassment, Abuse and Discrimination in Sport.

Culture and Participation: A 2016 report by Alberta Culture and Tourism did not identify rodeo as a common sport of high interest and participation in the province. How can a sport with so little participation and diversity of participants be representative of Alberta culture?

A United Conservative Party MLA is presenting bill 212 as a largely symbolic gesture. However, industry is already citing the bill as a reason to provide rodeo with special privileges during this COVID era, such as exemptions from public health restrictions. Government officials are beginning to discuss lasting policy changes that will drive more public funding to the rodeo industry. Still, the symbolism of considering rodeo as Alberta’s provincial sport carries thick connotations of sexism, ableism, and violence. This is a “sport” that glorifies men dominating frightened animals. No good can come from declaring rodeo Alberta’s provincial sport.
