EMERGENCY Dorian Relief Needed at Stonybrook Apartments!
The families at Stonybrook Apartments need emergency support now! In 2017, this section 8 housing complex in Riviera Beach, FL bore the brunt of Hurricane Irma, which tore off the roof from two buildings, flooded apartments and short-circuited exposed electrical boxes, causing a fire. Seventy residents were displaced.
Although it sits five miles west of the typical evac zone, last year the city of Riviera Beach declared Stonybrook a Mandatory Evacuation Zone. Now the complex sits directly in the path of the Cat 4 Hurricane Dorian, which threatens unimaginable destruction to the residents. However, evacuation is all but impossible for some of these poorest families in Florida many who have no cars, nowhere else to go, or even money for basic supplies like bottled water, forcing almost every tenant to stay put and risk life and limb.

Stonybrook Was Declared a Mandatory Evacuation Zone in 2018
To make matters worse, the apartment has sunken deeper into disrepair due to the criminal neglect of the notorious slumlord, Millennia Housing, which has done nothing but collect HUD subsidies while the tenants suffer with rats, roaches, mold, and sewage. To reiterate, absolutely NOTHING has been done since Irma to make the 14 buildings in the complex any more structurally sound and safer than they were two years ago, exposing the tenants to ever greater risk of catastrophe.
In recent years, as our organizers worked with the tenant leaders at the property, we’ve seen directly how even small storms could bring disaster for the residents. When it rains for several days, almost all apartments flood, causing damage to property and electrocution risks with wires exposed. Walls in most units are flimsy and the structure of all every one of the 14 buildings is unstable. In the J and I buildings, the roof caved in after a storm just this last January. If a day or two of heavy rain can cause so much damage, what could a massive Cat 4 hurricane like Dorian do?
Who We Are
The Palm Beach County Tenants Union is a tenant-led organization fighting for housing justice. Our membership includes tenant leaders at Stonybrook and other complexes, which is why we take these dangers so seriously. Often we and our neighbors face similar risk ourselves. The most vulnerable Floridians don’t have the luxury of laughing at hurricane prep. It’s a life-or-death matter for us. But we know that the most vulnerable among us need the most support. This is why we our scrambling to do everything we can to support our friends and comrades, the residents of Stonybrook, and give them something to shelter the blow of this coming storm. So we are now asking you, the community, to come rally and aid these families in their time of absolute need – however you can.
Where Does the Money Go?
The tenants of Stonybrook desperately need your help in this emergency situation. Any amount – even $5 – could make a difference in the lives of 200 of Florida’s most vulnerable families. Every dime you send will go directly to the leaders of the Stonybrook Tenants Union, an organization on the property run by and for tenants. Funding will cover bottled water, food, gas, relocation costs, baby supplies (i.e. diapers), clothes, first-aid kits, toilet paper, mosquito repellent, and more. The tenant leaders will be in charge of distribution of goods and funds, as they have been for past donations collected for the tenants. The only reason we collect the money is because of our tax advantaged status.
System Relief
We, PBCTU, have worked for years directly with the Stonybrook TU and its leaders to win justice in this neighborhood that’s been so neglected, marginalized, and oppressed for so long. From first-hand experience we know this is a man-made disaster that could be totally avoided, were this community to be handed actual resources and power to control their own lives and housing. We realize donations can’t solve everything, much less the fundamental systems of oppression in the lives of the residents. But it can give water, first-aid kits, hotel rooms, and a meal to hungry women and children. We also know that the state has failed to provide more than a modicum of relief for these tenants during good or bad times. The billionaire Cleveland slumlord Frank Sinito could care less, as long as his government subsidies & rent checks are collected, while politicians and HUD cozy up with him for kickbacks and campaign contributions. Nobody is going to save them or us. We as a community must save each other! We are the ones we are waiting for.
