Cleaning of Lubbock's Waterways!
THE CLEANUP
The River Raiders was founded by Melissa Starck-Dotson and Tavin Dotson in Lubbock, Texas. We are local Lubbockites and Tavin is a Tech Alumni! with a passion for our Yellow House Canyon! It all started one weekend on our way to go fishing at Dunbar Park. We arrived with a fearless optimism, but it quickly faded as we set up our gear only to find the waterway full of trash. Edges of the lakes and streams were covered in plastics, styrofoam, cigarette butts and so much more. We thought to ourselves how could anyone enjoy fishing, kayaking or simply being outside with so much trash around?
As time passed we sought out other fishing spots throughout the Yellow House Canyon and not one stretch of water was “clean.” One morning we were bored and said to hell with it and bought gloves, trash bags, made a handmade picker, and off we went! We picked a stretch of water right off of Avenue Q and started picking up trash, just the two of us.
While we have both always been passionate about the outdoors and more specifically fishing, it has taken us some time to formulate our plan. We have finally created the River Raiders and will be scheduling regular cleanups that anyone can join!
ALL MONY RAISED WILL GO TOWARDS CLEANUP SAFETY EQUIPMENT & ORGANIZED CLEANING EVENTS AND OTHER RESTORATION NEEDS.
