Special Needs Pet Rescue

St. Martin's Animal Rescue's mission is to care for senior pets, pets with trauma issues, and pets with medical conditions:.basically, to take in and care for those pets that very few, if any, rescues will take in.  St. Martin's mission is to take on the "least desirable" pets; although we feel they are the MOST desirable. St. Martin's also advocates for the "Compassion for All Sentient Beings."

St. Martin's is 100% volunteer based and is 100% foster home based. No one draws a salary and everyone involved works full time in their respective careers. There are no kennels and all pets live in home environments. Some pets are available for adoption; however, some of them are so traumatized or in such fragile health that they become hospice fosters and live out their lives in a foster home.

We are a very small rescue but we are able to do a lot with very little because we have wonderful veterinarians that offer discounts to us, we get some medications at cost and we get discounts on the high quality food (grain free) and supplements. 

If 1000 people donated $1.00 a month, we can continue to care for these super seniors and others that have been overlooked by everyone else. St. Martin's is a federally recognized 501c3 Charitable Organization so all donations are tax deductible.

Dogs in our care as of 10/29/2016:

1. Buddy: 13 year old shihtzu, hospice, blind, allergies, eye medications. Slated for euthanasia four years ago at a local humane society for being too old and bad eyes. (yup, Humane society!)
2. Helena: 8 year old shihtzu, one eye, rheumatoid arthritis, special diet due to meds, meds.
3. Bridget: Eye issues, deaf, special diet and environment due to allergies. Found as stray in Portland, Oregon and went to another rescue in WA state who wanted to kill her due to her expensive care. We intervened and took her in.
4. Walter: approximately 13 year old shihtzu with allergy issues, eye meds, special diet, incontinent, blind and deaf. Found as stray in Portland Oregon and was deemed “aggressive” at the shelter because he resisted eye medications.
5. Dale: adoptable, 6 years old. Has been in the rescue almost three years. No one wants him. Surrendered to high kill shelter. Owner said he bit his toddler.
6. Puffy: 15 or 16 years old, early stages of dementia, blind, deaf, picky eater….only will eat raw diet and pasta with butter.
7. Edie: 8 years old, Came to us with a very significant hernia which needed repair. Shy, but cuddly. Adoptable. Has been in the rescue almost a year.

9. Pepper: Super senior mini schnauzer, arthritic, significant allergy issues
10. Lemmy: Super senior mini schnauzer, arthritic
11. Tess: Blind and deaf, super senior shihtzu, beginning stages of dementia
12. Moto: 19 years old, pomeranian
13. Wookie: 6 years old. Behavioral. Forever foster. His original “rescue” dumped him at a kill shelter to be euthanized and this particular rescue claims to be “no kill” but they can do so because when they want to kill the dogs, they take them to the pound to get it done. He came to us emaciated and heavily matted after being in that “rescue” for thirty days. Must be sedated to be shaved down. Been in the rescue three years.
14. Rocco: 6 years old. Forever foster. Behavior. Allergy issues. Must be sedated to be shaved down. Been in the rescue four years.
15. Kasey: adopted three years ago from us, but returned after his adopter unexpectedly passed away and the family of the deceased did not want him. Adoptable, but has bite history in Linn County, Oregon. Originally came from a high kill shelter as he was dumped by his owner on her senior mother and senior mother went into assisted living. He is 8 years old.
16. Clyde: Forever foster. He was rescued from a high kill shelter. Owner dump. He was so scared he would urinate and defecate on himself when anyone walked by his kennel. Has nightmares and used to wake up and attack dogs near him. He no longer does this but is too “dicey” to be adopted to a home with other dogs and non-dog savvy people. Allergy issues. Been in the rescue 4 years.
17. Millie: super senior. Perfect in every way…but just old.
18. Danny: Feral. Forever foster. Loves other dogs, but not people. Ever. When he has to go to the vet or to the groomer, it takes at least an hour to catch him and we must use a chain leash and slip collar on him or he will chew through a regular leash in seconds flat. Been in the rescue 4 years.
19. Norman: 2 years old. Adoptable but has resource guarding issues. He was rescued at the last minute, was on euth list at a high kill shelter. He was part of a list of 20 dogs sent to us by that particular shelter. We rescued two from that list. One has already been adopted, Norman has not. He has been in the rescue almost one year.
21. Hurley: We pulled Hurley for another rescue but he bit his foster with the other rescue. After his quarantine period, we placed Hurley with one of our fosters. He is adoptable and just needs adopters who will be firm but kind with him. He needs boundaries and affection. Hurley’s placement efforts are in conjunction with the other rescue.
22. Benji: Senior. Paralyzed. Blind. Adorable and so very sweet. Hospice. He has been with us almost one year.
23. Max: Has been with us one year. He is a senior terrier. He has a lot of anxiety issues and even though he is only 11 years old (ya, only…ha!) we have decided to have him live out his life in his forever foster home because he is settled and understands the routine there. A change for him would be too difficult. His foster mom loves him and has done a lot of work with him around his anxiety issues. terrier

25. Marilyn: Senior. Has cancer. Hospice. chihuauha
26. Bianca: super senior, terrier. No teeth. Hospice. terrier
27. Teddy Bear, hospice care, heart issues. Came with rotten teeth. Maltese mix, 9 years old
28. Stanley- 14 years old, poodle mix, blind. Hospice care.
29. Trixie, tzu bonded with daughter, Kia, adoptable as pair. 15 years old.
30. Kia, tzu bonded with her mom Trixie. Adoptable as a pair. 9 years old.
31. Jacques, 3 years old. Poodle/terrier mix. Adoptable.



Poppy is a very special girl. She is blind due to diabetes. She is insulin dependent and upon her arrival to St. Martin's she had to stay three days in the hospital. We were afraid she would not make it.

Poppy's story with St. Martin's is not atypical. All of our dogs come to us needing a myriad of medical attention: dental extractions, tumor removals, various genetic conditions (rheumatoid arthritis and skin allergies) and we even have a dog named Bam who came to us with a bilateral perineal hernia! His diagnosis was a death sentence in a shelter setting and with most rescues because this surgery would run about $10k. Thanks to our relationship with Dr. Brooks at Homestead Veterinary Clinic and her organization, The Last Chance Club, Bam got a second chance at LIFE!  He is all well now and ready for adoption:
