<div>Dit is Muk. Ons vrolijke, eigenwijze en gevoelige meisje. Ze zit vol fantasie, liefde en plezier en raakt vele harten. Toch draagt Muk iets met zich mee wat je niet meteen aan haar ziet: bij Muk is Sanfilippo geconstateerd, een zeldzame en ernstige aandoening die ook wel kinderdementie wordt genoemd.

<div>Kinderen met Sanfilippo verliezen stap voor stap wat ze hebben geleerd. Praten, lopen, spelen. De ziekte is progressief en onomkeerbaar. Elke dag zonder behandeling betekent verdere schade aan het brein.

<div>In Amerika is een gentherapie ontwikkeld die de ziekte kan afremmen. Die behandeling bestaat. Ze is er. Maar ze kost een miljoen euro, en dat hebben we niet.

<div>Waar staan we?
</div>
<div>Meer dan 1.600 mensen hebben inmiddels gegeven. Samen staat de teller op ruim €464.000 — bijna de helft van wat nodig is.

<div>Dat is niet niets. Dat is een halve miljoen euro bij elkaar gebracht door mensen die Muk grotendeels niet kennen. Maar we zijn er nog niet.

<div>Waarom het nú telt
</div>

<div>De Amerikaanse toezichthouder FDA neemt in september een besluit over deze gentherapie. Als er groen licht komt, moeten we klaar zijn — niet dan pas beginnen met inzamelen.

<div>Want Sanfilippo wacht niet. Elke maand die verstrijkt is hersenschade die niet meer terugkomt. Wat we vandaag ophalen, bepaalt of Muk erbij kan zijn als het zover is.
