September 2017 Steve noticed a small spot next to his ear. Not knowing what it could be he made an appointment with the VA Ft. Worth clinic. His PCP just told him it was nothing to worry about. After a few weeks he had an appointment with VA Hospital in Dallas. After sometime the result he got was small cell cancer and rapidly growing. Months gone by and the cancer continued to develop in shape and size not to mention the cancer is down into the neck/lymph nodes. Come the end November 2017 they decided to do cancer surgery on his face and neck. He had to go through a few pre-op procedures. The test results showed that they couldn’t do cancer surgery until he had heat stints. The procedure for stints seemed forever. After sometime the doctor came out to me and said “sorry but it is bad news.” My heart began race. The doctor then said that they tried to enter 3 stints without any luck. The blockages were just very very bad. They decided to keep him inpatient to monitor his heart and cancer until they could vote on the best possible way to figure this out and keep him alive at the same time. The first part of the plan is to do open heart surgery. (7+/- hours). They said if they were to do the cancer surgery (5+/- hours) first that he would die on the table. The open heart surgery is scheduled for Tuesday, December 19th. After the surgery they will keep him inpatient in need for his heart to recover well enough to preform the small cell cancer surgery. They say January possibly early February to go home.... It all remains to be seen.

The best thing to do now is keep this updated to the best of my ability.

... What does this mean to us? We will spend our 5th wedding anniversary, Christmas and New Year 2018 in the Dallas VA. The best part of it all is that we will be together!

If you would like to visit give me a call to make sure he will be available. After surgery tomorrow he will be in ICU before he is placed in a room. The room info will be updated as soon as things calm down.
