As Elizabeth and I were preparing for our wedding, we came to the question of what to do about our registry. We quickly realized that between the two of us moving in together, we really didn't need any of the typical wedding gifts. That's when Elizabeth came up with the idea of a fundraiser where we would ask our wedding guests to take the amount that they planned to spend on a wedding gift for us, and instead donate it to our wedding fund. We will then take the money in this fund and donate it equally between two of our favorite charities.
One of the charities we will be donating to is the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelety to Animals (ASPCA). The ASPCA is a nonprofit, national animal welfare organization with the mission to "provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.” In 2016, this organization rescued or assisted over 10,000 animals, had over 4,000 adoptions from its adoption center and granted over $14 million to other animal welfare organizations , among other achievements. The other charity we will be donating to is Defy Ventures. Defy Ventures is a national and local nonprofit that has the mission of "transforming the
lives of business leaders and
people with criminal histories
through their collaboration along
the entrepreneurial journey". Defy utilizes local Omaha business leaders and Forbes 500 CEOs to harness the natural talents of currently and formerly incarcerated men, women, and youth and redirects them toward the development of personal transformation, as well as the creation of legal business ventures and careers.
