A Gift of Song for Steve Eubank

Donation protected
Calling all Topeka High School alumni who participated in Choir!

Were you in Mixed Chorus, Chansonettes, Choraliers, Robed Choir or Madrigals under the direction of Steve Eubank? Did you ever walk the boards in a musical at Topeka High under Mr. Eubank's direction? Did you ever sing "Go Ye Children" with the Robed Choir? Does "Fum, Fum, Fum" mean anything to you?

THEN WE NEED YOUR HELP:

We are raising money to commission a piece of choral music to be written in honor of Mr. Eubank's work at THS. This gift will be announced and presented to the THS Choir in Mr. Eubank's name after he retires. The goal of this campaign is to build the funds with which to commission the piece in recognition of Steve's work at Topeka High.

THE DETAILS:

Steve Eubank has announced that he is retiring at the end of this school year. That means it's time for all alumni to take action to help recognize and honor Mr. Eubank's 37 years at Topeka High School. If you were in a choir at Topeka High then you don't need to be told what kind of person Mr. Eubank is or about his devotion to music and his students. You've witnessed it first hand.

At Steve's request we are coordinating a reunion concert of current and alumni Madrigals, but Mr. Eubank has made it clear that he welcomes all current and former students to attend the concert that he will be conducting on the evening of May 12, 2018. This will be the last of these alumni ensemble concerts that Steve will ever conduct at THS.

The plan is to raise funds on Steve's behalf with the intention of presenting him with this gift at the concert on May 12, 2018 at which time Mr. Eubank will work with the committee coordinating this effort to commission a piece of choral music.

Steve Eubank's Legacy:

The numbers really speak for themselves when it comes to the legacy Steve Eubank has built at Topeka High. In 37 years at THS, Steve has conducted five choirs every year totaling some 200+ students per year attending classes in Room 228. Over the course of his career he has worked with over 7,000 students at Topeka High and in that time has directed musicals and conducted countless concerts at THS and throughout the Topeka community. In the process of his rigorous rehearsal and performance schedule he also found time to change the lives of his students by instilling in them his passion for music.

THE OBJECTIVE:

First and foremost we are coordinating the concert on May 12th, but numerous people have expressed an interest in doing more to recognize Steve's work at THS. After approaching Mr. Eubank it was determined that he was most interested in finding a way to commemorate his time by presenting a gift of unique and special choral music to THS in his name.  Any contribution you choose to make would go towards commissioning this new piece of music written by a professional composer.

HOW YOUR DONATION WILL BE USED:

Based on discussions with Steve we have determined that commissioning choral music costs approximately $1000.00 per finished minute of music. Based on those numbers we're hoping to raise enough money to commission a three to five minute long piece. Lyrics and style of the piece will be determined through collaboration between the composer and Mr. Eubank. Upon completion the piece will be presented to THS and included in performance as part of a concert at Topeka High in the future.

STRETCH GOALS:

So you may be wondering...
if you're only estimating that the piece of music will cost $5,000 then why is the goal $10,000? That's a great question... can you keep a secret?

This is between you, me and the whole internet... but we're hoping to do something MORE for Mr. Eubank.

When he was asked about what he would like as a potential gift recognizing his work at THS the first thing out of his mouth was this idea about commissioning a piece of music... and we all think it's a great idea... but he can't exactly take that into his retirement and get any personal practical use out it. So we'd like to propose some STRETCH goals built into this campaign from the outset.

Once we have enough money to cover the cost of commissioning the piece of music all additional funds will be put towards a few key items that Steve will be losing upon retirement from THS.

WHAT WE KNOW:

When Mr. Eubank retires he will be turning over all the technology that he uses in his role at Topeka High. This includes his iPad Pro and Macbook Pro. We would love to be able to replace these items as part of a gift to Steve.

We have also learned through conversation with Steve that he is planning a trip this summer to Chicago to see Tommar Wilson (THS Alumni) in Hamilton with his wife, Evelyn. Any remaining funds we manage to raise would be put towards helping make that trip possible by covering the cost of flights and hotel expenses during their trip.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:

I think at this point we all have a pretty good idea how much teachers make in the state of Kansas. Even teachers who have been in their positions for decades are not compensated commiserate to the level of dedication required to do their jobs well. Their retirement plan doesn't take into account the impressions they make on the lives of their students on a daily basis. Steve Eubank has dedicated his entire professional life to sharing his love of music with children in the Topeka community for almost 40 years, and we believe it's time for all of us to find some way to say Thank You for those years of service.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

All of these goals won't be possible without your generous support.
We are asking all alumni, friends, family, and even current students to consider showing your appreciation for Mr. Eubank's years of service by contributing to this fund. Your dollars will go towards the goals outlined above and aid in the process of demonstrating to Steve, and his wife Evelyn, that all the long hours and energy spent at the school meant something to those of us whose lives Steve shaped.

We are not asking you to break the bank.

Any amount you donate will help us get one step closer to accomplishing the goals we've set for this gift.

Whether you can afford to donate to this campaign or not we also ask that you consider sharing a link to this page on Facebook, Twitter or any social media platform you choose.

Tell your friends. Tell your fellow alumni and make sure people are aware that we are raising money to recognize and celebrate Steve Eubank's work at Topeka High School.

We sincerely appreciate your time, energy, support and any money you may choose to donate to this cause. Thank you!
