<div>De <a href="https://www.stichting-otterstation-nederland.nl/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stichting Otterstation Nederland</a> (SON) heeft er sinds 1985 - onder de bezielende aanvoering van Addy de Jongh (68) - voor gezorgd dat de otter (<em>Lutra lutra</em>) weer kon terugkeren in Nederland door middel van een opzienbarende herintroductie. De Nederlandse otter stierf uit in 1988, maar Addy en zijn medewerkers gaven niet op. Ze wisten met hulp, subsidies, donaties en sponsoring van velen de natte natuurgebieden en verbindingen daartussen te herstellen om de otter succesvol terug te kunnen laten keren in Nederland. En dat is gelukt! In 2010 werd Addy voor dit werk geridderd in de Orde van Oranje Nassau.

<div>De SON wil nu iets terug doen voor de inmiddels gepensioneerde Addy. De SON wil Addy ondersteunen in zijn streven om ook de otters langs de kusten van Europa beter te (laten) beschermen. Addy gaat dat doen via een promotie onderzoek (PhD) aan de <a href="https://www.rug.nl/staff/a.w.j.j.de.jongh/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rijksuniversiteit Groningen</a> en de University of South-Eastern Norway. De otters aan de kusten van Europa (de zelfde soort, ook <em>Lutra lutra</em>) staan zwaar onder druk door vervuiling, urbanisatie, visserij en toerisme. Door het promotie onderzoek wordt het duidelijk hoe ook hier de otter effectief beschermd kan gaan worden.

<div>Since 1985, the Stichting Otterstation Nederland (SON) - under the inspiring leadership of Addy de Jongh (68) - has worked to ensure that the otter (<em>Lutra lutra</em>) could return to the Netherlands through a sensational reintroduction. The Dutch otter became extinct in 1988, but Addy and his collaborators did not give up. With help, subsidies, donations and sponsorship from many, they managed to restore wetlands and connections between them to allow the otter to successfully return to the Netherlands. And they succeeded! In 2010, Addy was knighted in the Order of Orange Nassau for this work.

<div>The SON wants to give something back to the now retired Addy. The SON wants to support Addy in his efforts to also better protect the otters along the coasts of Europe. Addy will do this through a PhD at the University of Groningen and the University of South-Eastern Norway. The otters along the coasts of Europe (the same species: also <em>Lutra lutra</em>) are under severe pressure from pollution, urbanisation, fishing and tourism. Through the PhD research, it will become clear how the otter can be effectively protected here too.
