Coming Together For One Of Our Own
Billy Sterling, our Sigma Nu house custodian, is an admirable individual who has served the University of Alabama and our house in numerous ways for more than six years. Now Billy and his family are in a position where they could use our help in return.
Through my time at the university and here at Sigma Nu, I have come to appreciate Billy’s dedication to his job and his infectious, positive attitude. Billy has four children with his youngest being his 11 year old son, Shaquille Rashaun Sterling.
At such a young age “Shaq”, as he is referred to, suffers from a Pilocytic Astrocytoma Brain Tumor. Unfortunately, this type of tumor occurs most often in children and young adults under the age of 20. Due to Shaq’s young age, and the stage of development, they are unable to operate on him yet.
As this year’s Philanthropy Chair I reached out to Billy in an effort to learn more about Shaquille and see if there are ways for us to help them.
Through this effort I discovered quite a bit about his commendable efforts to provide for his family and care for his son. Billy is not one to let on about his circumstances and certainly does not let it affect those around him.
Billy commutes over an hour each day for work and drives his son two hours to Princeton Baptist Medical Center from Aliceville, Alabama once a month for screening and therapy. Costs for surgery in treating Pilocytic Astrocytoma range from $33,600 - $78,700 for “a small benign tumor in an accessible location”. Although the insurance provided by the university covers a portion of this, it does not help cover doctor fees, transportation costs, pain medicine or other everyday expenses that may be incurred in this situation.
