Stepping and Squatting for STEPS!

Tax deductible
Hey!!! I’m Sarah and I’m 21! I was born with conditions called Hip Dysplasia and Scoliosis! I was treated for suspected Hip Dysplasia as a child through Physiotherapy and we believed that when I was discharged this meant I didn’t have it and that it wouldn’t be an issue. However, my hips constantly caused me issues growing up but most doctors put it down to growing pains (Ironic because I’m only 4’11) or too much dancing as dance was literally my life! Which made this diagnosis a lot harder to process for me…

I was in my second year of my Musical Theatre degree at university when this became a major issue, my right foot began to turn in and I just couldn’t walk properly or far at all! (Not ideal when you’re a dancer!) After various scans and tests it was confirmed I did have Hip Dysplasia and Scoliosis. My surgeon decided the best way to treat my Hip Dysplasia was by carrying out a periacetabular osteotomy alongside a femoral osteotomy (this basically means they broke my right hip and femur in several places and reconstructed them using metal work to hold them in place!)

I had these surgeries in July 2021 and began my road to recovery and learning to walk again pretty much straight away! To celebrate being 6 months post op on January 1st and being cleared to exercise, I figured this would be the perfect time to raise money for the charity that provided me with all the information and support I needed during the hardest time of my life! Between January 1st and January 31st I’m aiming to do 1500 steps a day and complete 1000 squats within the month! (May not sound like a lot but I haven’t exercised for a while guys!)

Whilst being a professional dancer is now off the cards due to the intensity of the training and the physical demand of doing shows everyday I thought that by doing something like this it will help keep me motivated for my recovery on my bad days! Alongside helping to raise awareness and support for the charity that helped me get through such a weird and scary time! A lot of people don’t even know what Hip Dysplasia is and I would love to change that! Even if all you can do is follow my journey and share this page, that support alone could do HUGE things for people like me!!

ThankYou so much for taking the time to read the summary of my journey and a massive ThankYou to my friends and family for all their support!! I still have two more minor surgeries to go on my right leg but I know I can come through it stronger! ❤️
