Stephanie Martin-Ward Medical Bills

Stephanie was in a major car accident the morning of July 2nd. In addition to her van being totalled, she suffered major injuries. Worst among these were a broken fibula and a crushed right ankle and foot. All the bones in her right foot and ankle were broken. This type of injury is usually treated with an amputation.

However, given Stephanie's age and busy lifestyle, a surgeon in Modesto was willing to attempt to rebuild her foot. She underwent repairs to the left side of her foot on July 4th. During a 6 hour surgery, three plates were installed and rods were used to re-connect her first three toes to the rest of her foot. A second surgery on July 27th connected her remaining toes, made repairs to her heel and ankle, and two additional plates were installed. She also has 30 screws and miscellaneous wire in her foot.

Several additional surgeries are expected in the future. Despite these surgeries, it is still unknown whether Stephanie's foot will actually be functional, and there is still a possibility she may still face amputation.

Stephanie has been informed by several surgeons that her injuries are life-changing, and that she will never again walk unaided or without pain.

Because her injuries are expected to require anywhere from 12 to 24 months to heal, there is still uncertainty as to when she will actually be allowed to return to work.

As an adjunct instructor, Stephanie is not eligible for state disability benefits or FMLA, so now she has no income.   As an adjunct instructor, she does not qualify for insurance on her own.  Her husband’s insurance through a school district in Stanislaus County has high deductibles and co-pays.

The medical bills are quickly approaching $10,000.
