Medical Mission Trip to Guatemala

Donation protected
Dear families and friends,

I am beyond excited to share with you that I have been selected as a medical volunteer for a service trip at Guatemala, organized by International Volunteer HQ and the Red Cross Club at UMass Amherst. As many of you know, I am a pre-medical student passionate about medical service and healthcare. During the upcoming spring break in March 2018, I will be dedicating my time to work with local physicians and nurses in poor rural areas. As a medical volunteer, my responsibilities range from taking vitals for medical check-ups and sterilizing medical supplies to making beds for patients and being their companion.

You may wonder, “Why Guatemala?” According to a 2016 report, the physician population density is remarkably low in Guatemala - only 0.93 physician per 1000 people! With such inadequate coverage, you can imagine how difficult it is for Guatemalans to receive healthcare.

To me, this service trip is a meaningful step towards my goal of becoming a physician. To the Guatemalans in my service area, this is a free healthcare opportunity that they can receive from no one else but us! They rely on us volunteers around the world to provide them the healthcare they need.

My goal is to raise at least $1000 for the medical trip, with an end goal of $1700 to cover additional expenses I will need for flight and insurance. Any additional donation will go towards food and housing for my stay.

Thank you for your time in reading through this, and I truly appreciate your help.

With love,
Stephanie Choi
