We know that so many people in our area have been affected by Hurricane Florence and the flooding that followed. Hurricane Florence caused the N.E. Cape Fear River to crest at 25.58 feet and is labeled the “1000 year flood”. As the news cycle moves on, the people in our area still have a long way to go to get their lives back.
Many lost more than we did, lives, homes, and precious possessions. We are thankful that we are safe and sound and have a place to stay for now.
Ryan Shepard and I (Stephanie Ellis) live in the Horseshoe Estates Neighborhood in Burgaw, North Carolina. After Hurricane Florence and the flooding that followed we ended up with a flooded home. About an 18 inch deep top layer of the flooding Cape Fear River ( full of waist from farms and homes up river ) slowly seeped into our house, and then slowly drained out, leaving a layer of grey slime and an odor you can not believe.
We lost everything that was touching the floor up to about knee high in our house including all of our appliances, the flooring, furniture, other items, heating and air unit, electrical wiring, maybe our well pump (not sure yet on that one).
We do not live in a flood zone. Data shows that we had a 0.2% chance of ever flooding in our area. This has all been a total shock to everyone.
We do not have flood insurance, nor do many of our neighbors. We are currently meeting with FEMA and our home owner’s insurance agent, and are hopeful as we wait to find out what kind of resources we will have.
Ryan is dedicating all of his time and effort to restore what we lost and get us back into our home. He has a chronic auto-immune disease that affects his energy level to a high degree. In other words, he can do anything you or I can do, but only in short spurts, with time to rest in between. He has really been pushing himself, since several days before Florence hit as we began prepping, through the storm, and then the subsequent rushed evacuation to escape the flood. He has spent every day researching, talking to people, filing the appropriate paper work, and many other tasks. So far we are blessed that he feels pretty okay, or about as usual. We are hopeful that he does not encounter a setback in his health. He is doing his best to do everything possible that he can.
So many people have offered to help. We have been touched by the kindness and generosity of family, friends, neighbors, and people we do not even know.
We understand that some people want to help by gifting things we may need, some with their time, some with a prayer or kind word, and some would like to help us with the monetary expenses that we now have as we try to rebuild.
We also understand that some may want to donate to others besides us and spread their generosity.
We also totally understand that many people who care for us will not be able to help us financially.

P.S. I returned to work as soon as I could after the storm. ( Fortunately we are staying with family in Wilmington where I have my massage therapy practice.
