St Croix Pony Club Hurricane Relief

The St. Croix Pony Club, a non-profit 501(c)3 located in Frederiksted, St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, was devastated by Hurricane Maria in September 2017.   Their pasture area was destroyed, including most of the fencing, pens, water lines, pavilion, and the trailer that housed the feed and equipment.  (See photos below.)  And, a horse had to be put down.

The Club is still in the debris removal phase, but will need to begin rebuilding soon.  They should be able to buy supplies from their local Home Depot, but anticipate costs of tens of thousands of dollars.  They have over 60 acres and most of the fencing will need to be replaced/fixed. They also need to purchase a new trailer and build a shelter/pavilion.  The horses live in the formerly fenced-in pasture. Right now they are staying in the pasture because the alpha male was injured in the hurricane and doesn't have the strength to leave.  But the concern is that the horses may soon leave the pasture and get hurt – so the immediate priority is to get the fencing rebuilt.

The St. Croix Pony Club has been providing equine education and riding opportunities to children on St. Croix for over 50 years.  Their members learn to manage horses with safety and responsibility, leadership skills, and good moral judgment.  Parents, instructors, and community members volunteer their time and energy in to support the Club.  The Club currently has 9 horses, down from 10 before the hurricane.

The funds collected in this campaign will be delivered by GoFundMe to The St. Croix Pony Club.

I learned of the problems facing the Club because my niece lives in St. Croix and is a member of the Pony Club.
