Im Irak und in der Region Kurdistan im Norden des Landes kämpfen Tausende streunende Hunde und Katzen jeden Tag ums nackte Überleben.
Es gibt keine Tierheime, keine Versorgung, keine Zuflucht. Stattdessen herrscht Angst – vor Hunger, Krankheit, Gewalt.
Besonders Hunde sind Opfer eines brutalen Umgangs: Immer wieder werden sie in Massen von der Polizei erschossen – öffentlich, grausam und ohne Alternativen. Die offizielle Begründung lautet: Sie seien eine Gefahr für die Bevölkerung. Erst vor wenigen Wochen, in Shingal, wurden zwei jesidische Kinder von streunenden Hunden angegriffen und verletzt. Die Reaktion: Dutzende Hunde wurden getötet.
Das darf nicht die Lösung sein!
Wir wollen ein Umdenken ermöglichen – mit Taten, nicht nur Worten. Unser Ziel ist es, das erste Tierheim auf europäischem Niveau in der Region aufzubauen: Ein sicherer Ort für verletzte, ausgesetzte und kranke Tiere. Ein Ort der Versorgung, des Schutzes – und der Hoffnung.
Darüber hinaus und insbesondere soll Folgendes UNBEDINGT umgesetzt werden:
• Straßentiere (v. a. Hunde) aufnehmen, medizinisch versorgen, kastrieren und bei Eignung vermitteln,
• mindestens fünf jesidischen Frauen eine sinnstiftende, geregelte Tätigkeit bieten, die ihnen soziale Stabilität und emotionale Heilung ermöglicht,
• mit Schulen vor Ort kooperieren, um durch Exkursionen und Workshops den respektvollen Umgang mit Tieren und Mitgefühl als Bildungsinhalt zu vermitteln.
Das Projekt wird langfristig durch einen lokalen Verein getragen. Personalkosten für die Beschäftigung der Frauen werden vom Verein selbst übernommen. Die tierärztliche Versorgung erfolgt regelmäßig durch Fachkräfte im 3-Monats-Zyklus. Das Projekt setzt auf Kooperation mit lokalen Behörden, Bildungseinrichtungen und zivilgesellschaftlichen Akteuren, um Wirkung und Nachhaltigkeit zu sichern. Das Tierheim versteht sich nicht nur als Zufluchtsort für Tiere, sondern als Modellprojekt für ethische Bildung, Frauenförderung und friedliches Zusammenleben – in einer Region, die beides dringend braucht: Mitgefühl und Hoffnung.

In Iraq and the Kurdistan region in the north of the country, thousands of stray dogs and cats are fighting every day for sheer survival.
There are no shelters, no care, no refuge. Instead, there is fear – of hunger, disease, and violence.
Dogs in particular are victims of brutal treatment: time and again, they are shot in large numbers by the police – publicly, cruelly, and without alternatives.
The official justification: they pose a danger to the population. Just a few weeks ago in Shingal, two Yazidi children were attacked and injured by stray dogs. The response: dozens of dogs were killed.
This must not be the solution!
We want to inspire a change in thinking – through action, not just words. Our goal is to build the first animal shelter in the region that meets European standards:
A safe haven for injured, abandoned, and sick animals. A place of care, protection – and hope.
In addition, and in particular, the following MUST be implemented:
• Take in stray animals (especially dogs), provide them with medical care, neuter them, and find them new homes if suitable.
• Offer at least five Yazidi women meaningful, regular work that enables them to achieve social stability and emotional healing.
• Cooperate with local schools to teach respectful treatment of animals and compassion as part of the curriculum through excursions and workshops.
The project is supported in the long term by a local association. Personnel costs for employing the women are covered by the association itself. Veterinary care is provided regularly by specialists on a three-month cycle. The project relies on cooperation with local authorities, educational institutions, and civil society actors to ensure impact and sustainability. The animal shelter sees itself not only as a refuge for animals, but also as a model project for ethical education, the advancement of women, and peaceful coexistence—in a region that urgently needs both compassion and hope.
