Mural project to END STATELESSNESS

Award-winning Artist Svetlana Talabolina is creating a mural called “I BELONG...LIFE INSIDE THE GLITCH, 2022”.

A fearless and strong advocate for change, Svetlana is fighting for Stateless People worldwide to give them a voice. Stateless people don't have a country that will acknowledge them as citizens. They are not free to travel and do not have the protection of citizenship. They are Citizens of Nowhere. There are over 12,000,000 Stateless people worldwide, and Svetlana is one of them. Svetlana’s work is supported by the United Stateless and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Artist's Statement:

"My original mural affirms that all forms of discrimination and oppression, especially as Stateless Minorities, will be overcome, and Statelessness will no longer be something that we suffer through. We will be free to travel and see loved ones that have been left behind. Statelessness does not define us, and it will not bind us. My work reflects the 'glitch' in the system, which allows for Statelessness to exist. This project is highly important for me due to the fact that I am a Stateless person in the USA. The country I was born in (USSR) no longer exists. The country I grew up in (Estonia) does not accept me based on my nationality. For over 19 years, I have been unable to leave the USA to see my family. I never said goodbye to my loved ones who passed away. I am getting closer to the end of the second decade of being unable to leave, and I feel that I have to make a stand for myself and other 12 million plus people all over the world who are also Stateless." - Svetlana Talabolina
