Our Stories, Our Way.

Starfish International is a non-profit community-based program that focuses on girls’ education and upliftment of tomorrow’s youths. It has been in existence for 10 years now and enrolls 100 girls and 30 boys every year to benefit from a year-round program centered on helping students embody and manifest the qualities of Independence, Nobility, Service, Courtesy and Knowledge.

One of the organization's goals is to be financially independent, in addition to enhancing students’ capacity in writing and publication, while nurturing female authors. Starfish is establishing a publishing house that will be geared towards nurturing young authors and bibliophiles while delivering publishing services to The Gambia. Looking at the needs of the community, and even the country as a whole, our publishing house will be a great tool to impact youth and inspire aspiring writers, poets and photographers to share the stories and narratives of their own people. This will create a sense of ownership for the community and the students, because they will not just be publishing stories that tell of women in Europe, heroes in America or the articles of graduates in the western world. Our publishing house will share with the world the stories of African girls and women, the struggles and strengths of our cultures, the beauty of our diversity The Starfish International Publishing House will share with the world our realities, both our challenges and the positive and inspirational components of our African societies that many international broadcasters miss showing the world.

We are currently raising funds for our first project: printing two children’s books. Initial expenses are relatively high, but we are confident that after this first job, we could become self-sufficient. If you are able to contribute, any amount at all, you would be supporting young female authors who are ready to share their voices internationally. Your contribution will give someone a chance to share her story, to inspire the world, to showcase Africa for what it is.
