Stanford Tennis Portrait Dick Gould

Donation protected

Join Stanford Alums in celebrating the Career of former Men's Head Tennis Coach Dick Gould.

Coach Dick Gould was the Men's Tennis Coach at Stanford University for 38 years from 1966–2004. During this time his teams won an unprecedented 17 NCAA Men's Tennis Championships. John McEnroe, who led the Stanford team to the '78 title, and 50 others won All-American honors. Coach Gould's success and accomplishments are literally without parallel. But if you know Dick he would request that you stop right there. His character and humble nature prefers that attention not be drawn to his achievements. What a guy.

But a Stanford Alum and former player, unencumbered with the same humility, came forward earlier this year with a fitting idea for a tribute. In this (the official year of Dick's retirement from Stanford Athletics) professional Artists were commissioned to create a hand painted commemorative artwork featuring Coach Gould's career at Stanford. The artwork spotlights former players, career milestones and attempts to artfully justify why we all love Coach Gould so much.  The portrait has gone through four revisions and is now complete. Subjects in the artwork include: Dick Gould, The Bryan Brothers, Roscoe Tanner, Sandy Mayer, John McEnroe and the '73 Championship team. In the final version it was decided to include current Stanford Men's Coach Paul Goldstein (also a former Stanford player). He is seen standing with a forehand pose in John McEnroe's racquet. Coach Gould has seen various drafts and has expressed his satisfaction (and immense gratitude) for the effort.

The home for this original 36"x48" framed canvas artwork will likely be the Fluegel Room located within the Taube Tennis Center at 625 Campus Dr.  A mock-up showing how the artwork will appear (at actual size) at this location is shown below. It is also intended that a (smaller sized) canvas reproduction be made and delivered to Coach Gould as a gift. Donors contributing $300 or more will receive a 30" tall poster replica of the artwork. Donors who contribute at least $500 will have their names engraved on a small gold plaque displayed beneath the portrait.

The total Art commission cost is $6,500. Donations  have already been applied in the amount of $1,588 so the balance to raise here is $4,912. Alums, Former players and Fans of Stanford Tennis are invited to support this effort with a donation through this Go Fund Me campaign. The artwork is being rendered at the studios of AmericanSportsPortraits.com  in Las Vegas, Nevada. You may call or contact them directly with any questions or comments.

Lastly, please help publicize this campaign via FaceBook or forwarding to anyone you think might be a like-minded supporter of Cardinal Tennis or the legacy of Coach Dick Gould. We aren't able to use alumni or other donor lists from the University for a fundraising effort of this kind. So word-of-mouth is how we're getting this done. Go Cardinal!

      ---------------------------------- Update from September 13th, 2018 -----------------------------------

On the night of September 13th Coach Gould was celebrated on the courts at Taube Tennis Center in a brief ceremony at the opening of this year's Level 2 USTA Jr Tournament. Current Coach Paul Goldstein gave a heart warming speech and the artwork celebrating Coach Gould's career was presented. It was a wonderful night that was only made possible through the kind remembrance of 32 former Stanford players. To Coach Gould; it appears you not only created a dynasty in Men's Collegiate Tennis but a very close family as well. We salute you!
